Personality & Traits

General Overview AJ presents as aloof, daring, charming and not opposed to lubricating a situation with sweet words and puppy dog eyes. Yet internally AJ is attentive to details, well-guarded and mistrustful of others. While the young man displays relative control over his moods, psychological profiling and evidence suggests the young man experiences difficulties with emotional extremes in response to unknown stressors and an unwillingness to discuss them with counseling support services. Comparatively, AJ demonstrates proficiency under expected pressures of military service, though his rebuffing of authority could prove challenging moving further into his career. While inherently a social person, AJ has a tendency to not develop any meaningful relationships despite a youthful attractiveness and allure of and by either gender.

Personal History Aric Jacen "AJ" Blake was born on Betazed to Kirstopher and Lila Blake. While the pregnancy was relatively uneventful, AJ's birth was marked by severe duress to his mother and ultimately was discovered that his heart had ceased beating. Medically still-born, AJ's heart spontaneous began on its own as he drew his first breaths with his panic-stricken parents looking on. Immediately following AJ's arrival, however, the family would continue to be plagued by tragedy when his father fell ill and passed, leaving his son to be raised solely by his surviving mother.

A relatively happy child, AJ struggled with life on Betazed. His mother chose to remain upon his father's homeworld in some hope to keep her son connected to his memory. However, as a native Deltan and gifted with a telepathically active baby, the pervasiveness and lack of privacy of the culture hardened Lila's once bright spark of life. Secluding herself within the confounds of her own lab, a small facility provided by the lifelong work she had created to study interspacial stellar phenomenon, she kept AJ close and from the invasive questioning. While a remarkable child to have developed telepathically since birth, AJ's origins caused more questions and prying than Lila could sustain alone. Until AJ reached the age of five, she invested herself in educating and protecting him entirely on her own. The closeness of their bond only strengthened by the isolation, AJ grew attached and protective of his mother even as a small boy.

As Lila's research began to take on a life of its own, she enrolled AJ at the age of five to a local academy that specialized in young active telepaths. AJ remained within the academy's curriculum throughout his primary education. Academics provided little challenge to the boy, easily conceptualizing complicated skills and applying them, it was his emotional and social growth that proved to be the most difficult. While the atypical Betazoid child began to develop telepathic traits at age thirteen, AJ was already honing his abilities with broader strokes. By adolescence, AJ's Deltan traits came to the forefront and had been momentarily buffered by Lila's instinctive skill and care. Suffering from significant emotional distress and seemingly uncontrollable urges, at age sixteen AJ was hospitalized and treated for acute sensory disruption. A raised concern among the Betazoid medical providers, Lila blocked further inquiry, exclaiming Deltan normality.

During this same time period, Lila had remarried a Bolian man, Myka Koi, and became pregnant with her second child, Chance. AJ's reaction coincided with his own turmoil and renewed interest in his father's legacy. Distancing himself from his mother, AJ had pursued his father's old journals and discovered a fascination for archaeology and sciences. Much of the information appeared relevant, except for the odd footnote or obscure reference to the Blake family name. Shortly after, AJ began taking interest in exploratory opportunities at school and was developing a keen sense of aggression and manipulation, all relatively hallmarks of brooding adolescence.

Offered an opportunity to join the Stratmoore Foundation's Jenova Expedition at the age of seventeen, AJ spent a year off-world as a junior member. Earning himself a place on the team was the result of continued achievement in school, while his inherent telepathic skill made him an ideal candidate and excellent field medic. AJ speaks very little of his experiences on the expedition, the team returning far sooner than anticipated. AJ's attitude was assessed at the time to be more reckless and volatile, however his return and experience had granted him the rare chance at completing his final year of education and first year of Starfleet Academy admission concurrently.

Having left home once, AJ itched to leave again. While he adored his brother, the mother-son relationship appeared in disrepair and fractured, neither had demonstrated much effort to change that status. Upon completion of his first year exams, AJ departed Betazed and arrived to Earth's San Francisco Bay. During an incident prior to the second year finals, AJ was questioned for the alleged destruction of a science lab, being associated with several stolen artifacts and texts from the Federation Museum, as well of missing several of his classes. Supported by his academic sponsor, a liaison of the Stratmoore Foundation, AJ was subsequently never charged with a crime or reprimanded for questionable behavior. AJ was presented, and urged, to consider a special enrollment program upon Starbase 332 in order to complete his Academy training.
