Settling In

Posted on Tue Mar 6th, 2018 @ 11:51pm by Captain Liarra Von & Lieutenant Commander Solan Jekkar

Mission: A Day in the Life
Location: Station Security Offices

Jekkar stood by and examined the surroundings that were his new Security Department. The Andorian felt slightly uncomfortable as he wore the navy uniform for the Security Department on Starbase 332. He'd spent most of his life in Gold so it was a little shock to learn he was changing, though it wasn't a deal breaker. He saw the hassle and bustle and in some ways it seemed refreshing, he'd been teaching at the Academy the last year or so and whilst earth was busy it felt nowhere near the same as a Starbase.

He had been here a few days already and had started to make his Office feel a little more personal. With a three hindered and sixty degree view of the Security Department from this position it allowed him to monitor his large staff but also have a level of privacy. He made sure to keep his prized possession with him. His left handed violin.

The Andorian smiled and picked up the instrument, checking the strings and then taking the bow in his hand.

Von had been giving her knew chief of security some time to settle in to his new office before making a visit. She had met him previously when he first came aboard the station, but this was her first chance to really start talking strategy with him. Liarra was intrigued by his criminology background, which she hoped he could use to make a dent in the criminal activity on the station. While Three-Three-Two was not exactly a hive of wretched villainy, but it was the size of a small city. And like any city, getting control of the crime was a priority. As she approached Jekkar's office, she was ready to talk business. But the soothing sounds of a violin softly emanated from the office. Von stood outside the door for a moment before pressing the chime.

"Please come in." Solan commented as he stopped playing and looked towards the door of his Office. He could silhouette of a female figure at his door but could not make out any features or a face due to the slight tint within the window. The Commander waited for his visitor to enter.

At Jekkar's beckoning, the electronic lock disengaged, and the curved doors slid open, following the curve of the round office. In stepped Captain Von, her eyes darting around to see what he decided to do with his new work area. She turned to the andorian and smiled. "Good afternoon, Commander. I hope I'm not interrupting."

The Commander returned his Violin and Bow to its stand and focused to the Captain. "Not at all Captain what can I do for you?" He asked as he motioned to the vacant seat opposite his desk.

Von shrugged. "I don't really need anything in particular. I was in the area, so I thought I would stop by and see how you were settling in." She nodded towards the violin stand. "I wasn't aware that you played."

The Andorian nodded. "Since I was a Freshman at the Academy, I used a replicated one during my Academy days and then I had one custom made when I was in Austria." He then took his cup and sat back in his seat. "Left handed Violins are hard to come by."

"I played the violin once. Well, my fourth host, Niri, played," Von explained. "She had a knack for it. Me, not so much. Strangely enough, even though I never really listened to Earth's classical music before being joined, I do enjoy listening to it now. It must be something I picked up from Niri. I'll have to take your word for the rarity of left handed violins. I don't remember ever having problems, but then Niri was right handed."

He nodded. "From what little I know of Trills, things like that are common enough." Jekkar said politely as he bowed his head. "So can I get you anything? Tea? Coffee?"

Liarra gave a wave as she shook her head. "No, thank you. I'm good. Actually, I wanted to make sure that you were settling into your new role. I know policing a starbase can be a big leap for someone used to life on a starship. But then, you've already made that leap once in your career."

"Indeed." Jekkar said as he made himself a cup of tea from his authentic tea pot. "Armstrong Station then teaching at the Academy." The Andorian seemed humble about his background.

"Is there anything that you need to know about Three-Three-Two?" Liarra asked.

The Andorian male sat back in his seat as he held his cup. "What's the day to day activity like for the Station, from what I understand it's not as seedy or harbouring Criminal elements as much as the other Stations in the Frontier regions." Pausing he took a sip of tea. "Are there any issues you as Commanding Officer feel I should be aware of?"

"Well, the day to day activity is going to vary a lot depending on the department. The station is like a small city, and often the various parts are moving at different speeds. For you, much of your day will be managing all of the security officers under your command. We have a lot of traffic coming and going each day, with each ship bringing its own challenges. So dock security is something to pay attention to." Liarra thought for a moment before continuing. "We certainly don't have a policy of harboring criminals on this station, but there are always things that slip past us. As I said, it is a big station. The biggest challenge that you'll be facing is trying to keep up with any criminal element that is present on the station. Then there are the Akishiros. Their family has a special arrangement with Starfleet that dates back to the early days of the station, long before I was ever here. Deck 1403 is their domain. They provide their own security and maintenance, and we don't get in their way. Fortunately there are no major systems on that deck. I'm not a huge fan of the arrangement, but as long as there is no trouble, I've not been inclined to make a big fuss out of things."

The Commander nodded. "I'll be sure to bare that in mind." He slipped her a PADD. "I've taken the liberty of requesting the following members of staff for my Department, please don't take this as though I'm making demands but they're experts in their fields and I think they'll be of use." The Andorian lifted his cup. "With your permission of course."

Liarra took the PADD and glanced over it. "I can't promise you anything, but I'll see what I can do. Anything else?"

"Captain I have it covered." He said with a soft smile. "I'll be sure to inform you of my progress."

"Glad to hear it. Well, I'll let you get back to settling in. Keep me posted." Von shook Jekkar's hand again and made her way out of the office. As the door closed behind her, the soft sound of bow sliding against strings resumed.
