I am here to serve.

Mission: A Day in the Life
Location: Sickbay

Lieutenant Commander Decan walked the corridors of Starbase 332 with his hands clasped behind his back. He had taken every opportunity since he arrived to familiarize himself with the Starbase facilities. One place he had yet to go was Sickbay. One might have considered Sickbay a logical first stop, Decan did not. He knew that the majority of his time would be spent in Sickbay, and so prioritized seeing the rest of the station first.

Today was the day. It was the day he finally needed to report in for duty aboard. Instead of his usual deck by deck walk, Decan stepped off on Deck 83 and took the memorized route towards the Chief Medical Officer's office. He reached out for the chime.

Talia was not in her office, stepping out from the research lab she was in when the entrance chime had sounded in a tone only audible to Vulcans. Seeing the man reaching for the chime she smiled a bit. "Looking for Doctor Varen?"

Decan turned around. He immediately recognized her face from her personnel file. "It is agreeable to meet you Commander." He cocked an eyebrow slightly. "I am Lieutenant Commander Decan. I have been assigned to Starbase 332 as your Assistant Chief Medical Officer."

"Come in Commander, may I offer you a beverage? I have Terran Coffee, a blend the nurses call sugar cookie and K'met Tea readily available. ". She opened the door to her office with a palmprint and the scent of both drinks made her office a gently fragrant place.

"Tea would be acceptable." Said the Vulcan following his superior into the office. "I have been reading the latest Departmental reports, and I'm curious what you'd like me to focus on in my role?" Decan was clearly all business, asking this before being offered a seat.

Pouring two pale green ceramic cups, she placed one on her desk before offering him the other. Wetting her lips with her tongue she settled into her chair, taking a long sip of her tea. "I have become accustomed to doing everything myself, as I haven't had an official Assistant in quite some time. Dr. Lyr is very competent, but he's not very flexible making him less than ideal as an Assistant. What is your preferred specialty and working hours?"

"My specialties are Internal Medicine and Psychiatry ma'am. I am flexible as far as scheduling."The Vulcan took his cup and sniffed the tea before setting it aside.

There were unexpected depths to this man, and Talia nodded slowly in response. "In that case, I will have you work the beta shift unless there are unexpected cases. I would like to put Dr. Lyr on his preferred night shift, as I have not been able to accommodate his request for some time. You will have to request hours from the Chief Counselor should you wish to practice psychiatry here onboard. I try to not step on Counselling's toes as much as is possible. "

Decan raised a brow. "Beta shift would be agreeable ma'am." He thought a moment. "I will touch base with Lieutenant Commander Lantry about taking on counselling duties."

"Excellent" she murmured making a note of it on her PADD. "Many of the crew and civilians aboard the station are still suffering after effects of a viral outbreak we had recently. I include myself among that number, as the antigen was discovered to affect Vulcans and hybrids at a lesser rate and virulence."

Doctor Decan nodded. "I have read the pertinent reports ma'am and I will make ongoing treatment my main priority."

"Industrious of you" she complimented quietly taking a slow breath of the tea scented air. "May I ask a personal question?"

Decan raised a brow. "Proceed." He said with typical deadpan.

"What made you request this assignment? This isn't the ideal assignment if one is looking to advance in rank and position. "

"I did not request this assignment Commander. I am here to serve." His words echoed the old Vulcan adage.
