Reporting In

Posted on Mon Aug 7th, 2017 @ 1:15pm by Lieutenant Caitlin O'Reilly MD & Commander Talia Varen

Mission: A Day in the Life
Location: SB332 - CMO's Office
Timeline: Current

ON:

Caitlin didn't waste time unpacking, everything. She changed into a fresh uniform, straightened her hair and headed out of her quarters, with the PADD with the map and her orders in hand. It took her twenty minutes to get to Deck 83 and she said to herself, as the door of the turbolift opened, "there's got to be a quicker way."

As she walked around the corridor she passed the doors to the ER and was tempted to take a peek but decided against it. Get the bureaucratic stuff out of the way first, she thought as she walked up to the CMO's office and rang the chime.

The chime sounded in the earpiece that Talia wore, when she was not in her office but on duty so she knew when someone came to her official office door. She laid aside her tricorder and walked into her office, taking but a moment to straighten herself before she called out "Enter!"

Cate pressed the entry pad and the door slid open with a whispering hiss. She walked across the threshold and smiled as she walked over to the CMO's desk and said, "I'm Dr. Caitlin O'Reilly. Your new Chief of Emergency Medicine," and handed her orders to her new boss.

Taking the PADD she read the transfer orders and nodded when everything seemed to be in order. "Excellent. I'll be glad to have another qualified Trauma surgeon. Can I offer you a beverage?"

Cate took a seat in one of the chairs in front of the CMO's desk. "Coffee, please. Black. Two sugars," she said. "How long has the ER been without a chief?" she asked.

"Since I've been here. My other section chiefs and I have been pulling double duty in the ED. " Talia's smile was soft as she poured the woman some coffee from her pot and also topped off her cup. Two sugars plopped into the cup and she swirled it to mix it, before handing it to her. Her own she mixed with milk and chocolate.

Cate took the cup from Talia and said, "Thank you." She took a sip then asked, "do you get much business here?"

"Sure, in both the Main Sickbay and the Emergency Department. Some people just come here, and some will head the ER's way first. Past few days have been slow- but steady. "

Cate nodded. "I figured as much when I saw how much tourist traffic the base had," she said. "But that's good because I like to stay busy. What kind of shifts are we talking?"

"What kind of shifts do you want? I've been running the typical 8 hour set of shifts, with those that want them pulling 12s for coverage. I've been here every day, so I could use a bit of downtime- but not at the expense of my staff." Talia shrugged "One of the benefits of Vulcan blood is a diminished need for sleep."

"In my experience, two 12s 3 days on 2 days off seems to be less taxing on everyone and provides the right amount of coverage," Cate said. "And no one gets burned out. But this is your facility. I'm just in charge of the ER docs."

"Like I said, you can run the ER as you see fit, just let me take a shift now and again to keep my hand in." a smile touched her lips "I'd hate to lose skills just because you're here and I don't need to use them."

"You're the boss," Cate said, not wanting to step on anyone's toes. "You know the staff and the types of emergencies we will get better than I do so I look to your expertise during my transition. When would you like me to start?" she asked, hoping she would have time to unpack.

"Take a day or two to get yourself acclimated to the station and station life. Move in, get settled, wander the promenade. I'll be here. " Talia's nod was slow and steady "Would you like to meet the staff that's on now?"

"I would. Yes," Cate said, eagerly. "As far as the Promenade is concerned....any recommendations of interesting venders?" she asked as she followed the CMO out of the office.
