Mission: A Day in the Life

The maternity ward had always been one of the more pleasant parts of any hospital to visit. The happy families experiencing the joy of welcoming a new life to the universe was always exciting, even to Liarra. Although she hadn't made too many trips to this part of the station since joining the crew, it always made for a nice escape from the burden of command.

This time she wasn't just going for a relaxing walk. She was making a social call, excited to meet the new bundle of joy belonging to her good friend S'er'in'e and his mate Samanthia Akiashiro. Her trip was unannounced, mostly because S'er'in'e had not yet invited her to visit. But even on a large starbase, rumors and stories spread like wildfire. It was apparently difficult for people to keep word of a Caitian/human cub being born secret.

Even though the main infirmary was a rather large section of the station, the maternity ward taking up an entire section by itself, it didn't take Liarra long to find her target. It was tough to miss a 7'6" feline roaming the halls near a nursery. Liarra smiled when she finally caught his attention. "I suppose congratulations are in order. How does it feel to be a father?"

"Captain Von." S'er'in'e spoke as he turned to face her, the customary bow, he looked around to see they were out of earshot. "Liarra." It was perhaps strange to see S'er'in'e smile, wide enough that his fangs could be seen peeking from under his top lip. "It has yet to properly sink in, being my first it is all new to me but I believe it will settle in swiftly and with my Mate having had offspring before her guidance will be counted on."

"It does take some getting used. But once you're holding them in your arms, it will start to feel natural, and make you wonder why you never thought of this sooner." She laughed briefly, her memories coming back to her. "I've been a father and a mother. It's difficult to say which one was better. But either way, you're going to enjoy it. You may not get much sleep for a while, but you'll enjoy it. How's Mom holding up?"

Samanthia was inside one of the examining room, going through post-birthing check-up with her physician. Mariah was in the Maternity Ward Nursery where she had been placed after a more in-depth examination because of the mix-species birth. Samanthia was feeling grouchy and swore silently to herself that the next baby was going to be carried to term by him, S'er'in'e after all the probing and examination by the doctor. Let the big Cat go through this. She just wanted out and pick up Mariah and head back to the Akiashiro Deck and her apartment. Knowing that Tamarue would be visiting a lot. She still felt a little weak that was fading fast with each moment. She gave the stock answers when asked questions that would allow her to leave to rejoin S'er'in'e and her latest Daughter, Mariah. She just wanted to go home and relax. She smiled absentmindedly at remembering S'er'in'e holding his daughter for the first time with an even softer masculine rumble of what passes for a purr. And the softening of his expression to show his softer side that he kept even hidden from her. A boyish sense of wonder with an adult pride gleaming in his eyes.

"My Mate is in having checks done presently, they want to make sure all is well due to the mixed species." S'er'in'e explained to Liarra hoping all was indeed, well.

"Understandable," Liarra replied with a nod. "Samanthia seems to be a strong woman. Then I suppose she would have to be to keep you in line. I'm sure she's doing well."

In the Nursery, Mariah had kicked off the blanket and busily feeling her toes, laying on her side with her tail wiggling in slow curves and sweeps back and forth. Ears swiveling at each sound emanating around her. Flickers of green could be seen between the eyelids. Spying her tail, she grabbed it by the tip and put it to her mouth. Chomp! "Miarrrowww! Waaaaaarrrooww..." Eyes opened widely as she yowled from the pain of the chomp on her tail, displaying the cat-like iris of her pupils.

Liarra heard a strange sound coming through the nursery, even through the glass. She turned to investigate, and nearly let out a coo of her own. "Awww, she's adorable. At least I assume that's her. She is the only one with a tail." Liarra waved through the window, trying to get the baby's attention. "What's her name?"

"Mariah." S'er'in'e replied looking through the glass at his first child.

Samanthia walked with the nurse inside the Nursery to crib that contained her daughter. Smiling softly with eyes for her daughter only. Nodding to the nurse on instructions coming from her. Mariah sensing the approach of her mother, rolled on to her belly and did the caterpillar scrunch, moving to crib bars. "Me-you, Me-you.." She picked up Mariah and muzzled her cheek against her head and ears, whispering, as she turned, holding Mariah so that Liarra could get a good view of hers and S'er'in'e's Daughter. She gave S'er'in'e the thumbs-ups that the check-up went fine.

Liarra gave another wave to the baby as she ducked slightly to get at eye level with Mariah. She mouthed "hi" as she waved, though she doubted the baby was able to read her lips.

Mariah looked at Liarra with eyes wide along with her pupils, as she stuck her thumb into her mouth. Spying daddy, the thumb came out, reached for him. "Ki-ow!"

Samanthia smiled and waved to Liarra through the viewing window. She gave S'er'in'e a wave with the fore finger up, signaling she'll be out in a minute with Mariah.

S'er'in'e purred and loudly so overjoyed at the concept of Fatherhood and before him it lay as his large furry hand lay upon the glass separating them.

True to her word, Samanthia exited the Nursery with Mariah on arms. She walked up the corridor to both Liarra and S'er'in'e. Mariah eyes half closed with contentment and the smug felinish look of contentment. "Hey Ser." Voice warm as she leaned against him briefly. She smiled at Liarra. "Hi, Liarra."

"Hi, Samanthia," Liarra replied. She leaned down towards the baby. "And hello to you too, Mariah," she added, reaching out to the baby's hand. Her voice raised an octave or two before going back to normal. "How's Mom holding up? I remember being absolutely exhausted after giving birth."
