Personality & Traits

General Overview Melissa is a very friendly and compassionate person at her core. She always carries herself with a very lighthearted demeanor that could put the most tense person at ease. She dose have a sharp wit though. She is not to be underestimated, as she is a very resourceful individual.

However, there is a lot more to Dr. Daniels than the friendly and confident personality that she exhibits on the surface. When angered, she slips into a very uncharacteristic seriousness that few people really see, and even fewer understand. When these moments happen, she can become very stolid and uncaring.

These moments usually come and go, she can be stolid one moment, and display her usual personality the next.
Strengths & Weaknesses Melissa is a kind and compassionate person, at least on the outside. Further within lies a personality not many people know. Also, her personality shifts when she is angered.

She has a hidden stoicism that many can find very disturbing. When she shifts into this demeanor, it seems as if her emotions completely disappear, and all that remains, is the need to do what needs to be done.

What is not known about Melissa is, while she has impressive knowledge in medicine, she also is well trained in hand-to-hand combat. In essence, she knows many ways to kill people, and she knows many ways to heal people.

Personal History The Person known as Melissa Daniels has only been known to the Federation for ten years, before that time, Melissa went by the name of Kris Valtan, a Federation Colonist from Epsilon Idris IV. However Official Records indicated that Kris Valtan died eleven years ago during a shuttlecraft crash

Epsilon Idris IV was situated nearby the Cardassian Demilitarized Zone, and very early in her life, she saw and endured life where Cardassian attacks could happen at any time.

When the Federation signed the DMZ treaty, Epsilon Idris IV instantly objected to a treaty that, they thought, favored the Cardassians. Colony officials were approached by the Maquis, but the Colonial officials did not trust the Maquis. The Maquis were seen as unstable and dangerous. Therefore, a far more subtile and effective defense was devised by the Epsilon Idris IV Colonials. They would use subterfuge and assassinations to prevent the attacks.

With the use of several retired Starfleet Intelligence agents, and even a defected Romulan Tal'shiar agent that the Epsilon Idrans bought, a secret special forces unit was trained and was given the name; Broken Spear."

Broken Spear agents operated alone, without any backup, without any knowledge of each other, and without any connection to the Epsilon Idrian Colony. They were given missions from dead drop locations that were individual to each agent, and were given explicit instructions to execute their missions without leaving any collateral damage or diplomatic incidents in their wake. In essence, they were assassins, and those who promoted the violence and war in the colonies were the targets.

Kris was recruited at a very early age by Colonial Officials due to a selection process that emphasized creative thinking, physical and mental capability, and other factors. She was about fifteen when she was recruited, but Kris was willing to enlist in Broken Spear to protect her parents. Broken Spear faked her's and her parent's deaths, and then took Kris as a trainee. The training was intense, and it transformed Kris into a assassin. Her parents were placed into a safehouse on Betazed and given new identities.

Kris' first mission was to assassinate a Cardassian Colonial Official, and frame his wife as the perpetrator. The target, Gentak Vas, had connections to the military, and used his connections to arm his colony covertly. Not only did Kris infiltrate the Official's residence, but she flawlessly executed the official and left convincing evidence of an affair between the official and another woman. The Cardassians were convinced and Broken Spear was impressed.

Kris would continue to execute missions for Broken Spear, but she did feel guilt for the people she killed. Even though they were the people responsible for the ongoing conflict between the Cardassians and the Maquis, she felt that with every assassination, she was loosing whom she used to be. Her life would change when the Dominion War began.

Epsilon Idris was amongst the colonies to be destroyed when Gul Dukat made his alliance with the Dominion, however there were still Broken Spear agents within the new Dominion. Many of them were discovered and killed while they tried to fight on. Some abandoned the cause and became independent mercenaries. Kris fought on until she was found mortally wounded after killing a Cardassian Legate on Chin'toka, right after the First Battle of Chin'toka.

Starfleet Intelligence was especially interested in what the Federation had found. They knew that there was some form of organized group preforming assassinations of high-level Cardassian officials before the war, but the sheer reality of what the Epsilon Idrans created amazed SI. Starfleet Intelligence instantly recruited Kris, for their deepest and darkest missions. It was then that Kris began to hate being a killer.

Her missions bordered on the edge of morality, and were not limited to, infecting Ketracell White shipments, destroying Jem'hadar shipyards, even destroying Jem'hadar cloning facilities. But with every mission, she felt the sheer guilt of her actions increase. After the Battle of Cardassia, she faked her own death once again. This time, Kris Valtan was dead and buried.

Kris took the new identity of Melissa Daniels, A Starfleet Medical School student, and she was content with her new life. She felt satisfaction with saving lives rather than taking lives, and she studied medicine with a dedicated and unusual vigor. She graduated from Starfleet Medical School first in her class, and earned the Leonard McCoy Physicians Medal soon after graduation for organizing an emergency hospitaly on her first assignment on the Hospital Ship USS Nightigale.

The Nightingale was assigned to the Typhon Expanse to a boarder Federation Colony, HV-119, along with a detachment of Marines, but the Nightingale was chased away from a group of pirates. Kris managed to set up a field hospital on HV-119 using Marine Medics and Civilian Volunteers. She managed to keep the Marines and the colonists alive for two days before Starfleet Reinforcements arrived.
