Monthly Security Report

Posted on Sun Jan 22nd, 2017 @ 5:07pm by Lieutenant Commander Craig Travis & Captain Liarra Von

Mission: Shadows and Whispers

Travis so far had a rough start to his stint on 332. He had gotten moved in no problem, but since then he had almost been blown up in a still open hacking case. Now in the last month his Chief had transferred and left the Security team at least in interim in his hands. So for the first time Travis had to make the monthly report to the Base Commander. He had no problem but had not really had much interaction with Captain Von. Travis made his way to the Captain's office and let the Yeoman at the door know he was here to give his report.

The yeoman led Travis to Von's office and pressed the door chime. "Captain, Lieutenant Travis here to see you."

Von put aside the requisition report she had been working on and looked up towards the door. "Thank you, Tallel. Send him in." She took a drink of her cappuccino and motioned for her interim security chief to come inside. "Good morning, Lieutenant. Please, have a seat. Could I offer you anything?" Von asked, gesturing towards the replicator behind her.

Usually rank didn't bother Travis much. His theory was everyone puts their pants on the same way. For some reason the fact that Von was in command of such a large base kind of was intimidating Travis. As he entered he kind of stammered a bit. "No.. no ma'am I am fine I just wanted to stop by and give you a run down of the Security status of the base in lieu of my previous Chiefs departure." Travis stepped up and offered her his PADD.

Von accepted the PADD and skimmed over it, but she could still see Travis standing through the corner of her eye. "You really don't have to stand there, Lieutenant." She pulled the PADD down. "You're a former marine, aren't you?"

"Yes, Ma'am. Very proudly to say I was. Hard to hear former, but alas here I am." Travis said with a half smile

"That's what I thought," Liarra said, nodding. "How have you been handling the change in assignment?"

Travis took a minute to decide how he wanted to respond. "To be open with you it has gone well. Before I was a Marine I worked as a beat cop in San Francisco. This assignment feels more like that. I think if I had been put on a ship to do Security and Tactical it would have been harder."

"I'm sure that makes the transition much easier." Von held up the PADD. "Alright, Mr. Travis. I can review the details later. Why don't you give me the short version for now. What's the general state of things on the station?"

Travis took a more at ease pose. "Well we have had a couple major issues I wanted to bring to your attention. Investigations are still on going into the listening devises found. I was tracking a hacker who was causing issues for businesses in the promenade and when I went to apprehend him he had his room trapped. There are a couple murder investigations we are working to wrap up." Travis took a deep breath. "Lastly I want to sit down with the next Chief of Security and your command team so we can talk about the increase in 'gang' like activity driving crime up in the lower regions."

"Good. The lower decks has been a concern, though we've managed to keep most of it contained. I know that's not optimal, but maybe our new chief of security can make some headway. Tell me, Lieutenant, what kind of qualities do you think we should look for in a new security chief?"

"I would like to see one that obviously can see the big picture, but at the same time is not a desk-bound chief. He needs to be out there working investigations with his team. He needs to be in the field to see what the conditions are. He also needs to have a drive to make the tough calls to serve and protect the people of the Base." Travis felt passionately about what makes up a good chief.

Liarra nodded along. "I see. From what I've heard, that sounds pretty similar to your style of police work. Don't you agree, Lieutenant?"

Travis thought about it for a second. "I suppose we always want a Boss that thinks similar to ourselves. Makes going through the day much easier when we already have an idea where we are coming from." Travis starting putting some ques he was getting together but he didn't want to overreact. "Do you guys have a short list yet of candidates?"

"I do. There are a number of highly qualified candidates for the position. But very few of them know the station as well as I'd like. I think the best police officers are ones who know their beat well. I'm sure you know where I'm going with this."

"I think we are on the same page, Cap. Or I hope we are on the same page. I have not been here long, but I have been very active getting around the base and on the beat." Travis replied hoping he was reading the Captain correctly.

"Maybe you haven't been here long, but you are qualified." She gestured towards her terminal. "I've been reading up on your file. I see a lot of potential, and from what I've heard you have shown a passion for your work. Do you think you're up to the task?"

"Yes Ma'am. One thing a former General once instilled in me was a simple saying really 'Always, Forward' I would be honored to take on this task." Travis had a rush of things enter his head that he knew he had to get done if he was given the job permanently. "I thank you for the vote of confidence."

"You're welcome, and congratulations, Lieutenant." Von rose to her feet and offered an outstretched hand. "I'll adjust your record and remove the interim from your post. I think you've earned it."

"Thank you, again. I will get right on the issues we discussed and when my team has a plan for the lower levels I will bring it by." Yravis shook her hand before heading back to the Security suite to change offices.
