Ten days later the team arrives back on earth and gets debriefed and given shore leave and new assignments, all except for Alex who was ordered to attend therapy sessions for as long as the Counsellor deemed that she needed it.
- Somers Residence 5 days later –
Still attending her sessions Alex was working a desk job while she was recovering and on her days off she wandered around her house like a zombie, her sister Karyn tried to get her to interact, but nothing. They even called her Boyfriend Paul Sharpe over to see if he could shake her out of her self-imposed solace, he could not, she barely acknowledged him when he was visiting, he never visited again and had said “Let me know when she is ready” with that said he gave her space.
Standing in the back with her father watching her elder sister sitting ramrod straight on an ornamental bench looking at nothing in particular “you know daddy I worry about Alex, this is not like her, did you manage to find out what happened to her on her secret mission?” Karyn asked.
“No sweetie I did not, the only thing they would say is that she lost someone close to her and broke down for a short time on the mission” Samuel Somers answered.
Looking at her father “Was she not close friends with a girl called Annabel Graves?” Karyn Somers asked then it dawned on her what the issue was “daddy will you go get us a glass of blood wine and water for me, I think I know what her issue is” Karyn said and walked over to Alex and sat next to her.
Sam saw his second daughter say something for a spell when Alex turned to face Karyn and grabbed her in a tight hug and Samuel heard heavy sobbing coming from Alex. It was here he decided to get those drinks for the girls.

At the wall of the fallen Alex lights a candle and places it in a candle holder below Annie’s name, she was a Gunnery Sergeant now jumping a few ranks when her superiors saw her Starfleet Academy test scores. As she said, a silent prayer there was drill going on in the background which she ignored.
“As promised Annie, I light a candle and think of you on this day, the day you died a year ago, I still remember what you said and keep your memory alive in my heart, it is the one place I access when I am feeling down, ” Somers said to the wall.
A freshly minted Second Lieutenant ignorant of what he heard her say and what it meant to her walked up to her, he was one of those arrogant persons who thought the world turned around him. Two senior officers a Major and Colonel Donohue are drawn to the events unfolding at the wall of the fallen.
“Who is the Red head Sir?” the Major asked.
After a closer study “well I do not believe it, that is Gunnery Sergeant Alexandria Somers, she has a very high IQ and a temper to match and if I am not mistaken Lieutenant Briers is about to find out for himself” Donohue said.
“Who is Briers sir?” the Major asked.
“Oh he is a newly minted Second Lieutenant who too the upper class to a new level, he was the arrogant one I told you about, I do not know what he is saying, but Somers looks none too pleased, I wonder how long she will hold her temper, and, ” Donohue said.
Back down at the wall of the fallen Alex is aware of someone approaching, she glances back and sean officer.
“So, Sergeant, I know why people talk to that wall, but what reason do you have to speak to the name” he leans forward and reads the name “Annabel Graves, I have seen you around and you have no friends, so why would you speak kindly to someone you do not know?” Briers asked.
Without looking at him “Please walk away Sir, I will only warn once” Somers responded.
Briers and his two cronies who joined him found her reply funny and all were green around the gills and did not notice Alex’s stance change.
“I warned you, Lieutenant,” Somers said
Briers grabbed her shoulder and roughly turned her around, or tried to “you are speaking to an officer Sergeant, face me when you do”
Alex grabbed his hand, squeezed as she turned to face him and twisted his wrist and his face went crimson, and filled with pain.
“Lieutenant, I would watch what you say, sir, respect goes both ways, you speak ignorantly on what I am and my reasons for being here. I am not a greenhorn like you sir and if anything you should show a veteran respect, I was in combat when you were applying to OCS. Until you have had combat experience do not speak of what you do not understand” Somers said releasing the Lieutenants hand and walking away.
The Colonel and Major who were watching the events unfold were smiling; both had learned never to assume that someone as young as Somers was to be underestimated. On Stardate 237301.09 Alex got a field commission to Second Lieutenant and this was where her story would truly begin.
237211.11 - 239111.11
Every year from that day on Alex stood vigil for a full hour on the 11th of November every year duties permitting and even when she could not get away, she always remembered her promise. Now a Major in her last vigil was seventeen days before she was due to take command of the new Marine Division being set up on Gaia Colony.
Now it is Stardate 239205.08 and Alex arrives on Starbase 332 for her new duty, she hoped that she could remember what action was. She had been stuck behind the desk and in political and diplomatic functions for too long, she was looking forward to breaking some heads, but she figured that would be on the holodeck not in real fact, but another vigil was coming up, she just hoped that she could attend it this year.
