Before The Storm

Posted on Mon Feb 12th, 2018 @ 11:14pm by Lieutenant Zev Darach

Mission: Weathering the Storm
Location: Strategic Operations Center

Zev took a deep breath as he stepped into Strategic Operations for the first time. He looked around and did his best to keep his beaming smile under control. This was his department. A look to the left and he saw his office, behind a large sliding glass door. He certainly didn’t think that this day would come so early in his career. Still, it was going to be a welcome challenge.

He enjoyed his time on the Hamill but the routine there seemed to be getting stale and old… Zev did not like things getting stale and old. His keen tactical mind and attention to detail had earned him high praise on the Hamill but he longed for a bigger role and a bigger challenge. When the position for the Strategic Operations opened up on Starbase 332, Zev had requested a transfer. His commanding officer was not thrilled to let him go but understood the young man’s desire to branch out and try something more.

He slowly descended the stairs into what was known as the pit. A large holographic map of the sector hung in space over the central display table. Several other stations were arrayed around the edges of the circular area, all of them blinking the lockout code. He walked to the center station and placed his hand over the display.

“Computer, transfer command of Strategic Operations to Zev Darach, confirmation code Epsilon Zeta Blue 34.”

“Command codes transferred,” the computer dutifully responded. “Welcome Mr. Darach.”

The screens in the room came to life, along with a slightly brighter section of overhead lights. Zev secured the station and then walked over to his office, smiling again as the doors parted away so that he could enter. He stepped inside and saw that some of his possessions had already been delivered. He walked around the desk, reaching down to skim his fingers across the smooth surface. This was his chance… a chance to make a real difference.

The large oval window behind his desk looked out into space. It was an infinite backdrop of stars and possibilities. Zev lowered himself into his chair and broke out into a grin. This was going to be a challenge and Zev loved challenges.
