Mission: Worlds Away
Location: Mess Hall [USS Jackal]

[ON]

Ensign De'Havean moved through the Starbase 332 to the docking ring that held the USS Jackal. She was a bit nervous with the upcoming trails of the new maneuvers she had tested and worked on in the Holo-deck. It was now sink or swim time of doing the same manuevers with an actual ship of the line.

Sentient Factor... She thought as her tail weaved tight "s" curves behind her from the worry of having to deal with actual people, Crewmates of the Jackal.

She entered the ship's makeshift briefing room, looking at the assembled crew. She moved to the display console and uploaded her new style of manuevers. Calling them the De'Havean Manuevers for now. As she waited for the First Officer to show up as the Captain, Commander Von, was off station on another assignment. She could feel the eyes of the others watching her as they conversed with each other.

"Okay, Ensign." Kelly said as he walked through the ingress, trying his best not to crack his head on the lintel. "What've you got for me?"

Erica looked up from double checking to make sure the info was loaded correctly, "It using the warp magnetic fields for sublight maneuvers..." Bringing up the display of the USS Jackal with the different colors representing the warp magnetic fields. "...as everyone knows that warp speeds are achieved by the magnetic fields to propel the ship to speeds excess of faster than light. But instead of using it for warp speed. We use it for to enhance maneuverability of the Jackal. I've tested this on the holo-deck simulations and have shown Commander Von, before she left the station, for her permission to take the Jackal out to test this with the Sentient Species factor." Looking up at him. "The Defiant and variant is the suitable platform for this phase of the testing. According to the holodeck and my figures, These new Maneuvers using the warp magnetic fields for maneuver instead of just only for FTL flight."

She ran the view of using the warp fields for maneuver, showing how the USS Jackal would perform. "That is the holodeck version as I tried to make it simulate actual flight. But unfortunately, as the holodeck is nice for these tests. It don't have the Sentient Element to make it practical. Thus we..I need the crew and USS Jackal for the final testing to be sure that it'll be an asset and works under fire."

Kelly stared silently at the projection. "Will this work? Is there not a danger that if we utilize the warp field at sublight that the sheer force of the movement could rend the Jackal apart?"

"What may work on the holodeck with one set of results, may have entirely different results here outside the holo-simulation. Thus this involves of having actual crew and machinery outside a computer generated event."

"Right..." the Lieutenant said hesitantly. Given the Ensign's response hadn't precluded the chance that the Jackal could end up a burning wreck floating through space, he was less than enthusiastic about the idea. "What are the odds that the test will actually be successful?"

"I'd say there will be at least 89% rate of success in using actual ship and Crew outside the safety factor of the holodeck simulation programming." Erica looked smugly at Lieutenant Kelly.

"How do you plan to guarantee the safety of the crew?" Kelly asked with a cocked eyebrow. "Is there some kind of fail safe to cancel the maneuver if it starts to go wrong?"

"That depends on how fast the Engineering crew can cool down the warp core. It'll be like flying the ship at warp 9 through molasses. If not, shut the warp core down, and we'll draw power from the Impulse reactors." Erica scanned through the material she had accumulated from the holo-deck trails, bringing up relevant data. "But this information is Biased in favor of holo-deck safety protocols. I figure engineering can over-cool the warp core from the get go, which should give us an extended two to three hours of good steady operation of radical maneuvers if the warp magnetic fields can maneuver the ship like I intended. This will give us an advantage of over more practical method of air, chemical and ionic exhaust from impulse thrusters for a more immediate response in change of direction quickly."

Erica spoke with assurance that her sublight warp magnetic maneuvers would work. "With the problems that develop in actual flight, we can hopefully correct. Only problem I see is the Sentient factor and keeping the Warp Core cool enough to meet the demands of both providing weapons, shield, life support and maneuvering." Looking back at Lieutenant Kelly. "Since I'm familiar and developer of the *De'Havean WM Maneuver, I can anticipate problems. With Engineering watching over the Warp Core and Structural Integrity Fields, We should be able to catch any undo problem that may developer before they become life threatening, Sir."

Kelly offered a supportive nod as the Ensign seemed itching to continue.

"I have the flight route and location of sector where we will be maneuvering in. Before we leave the station, a copy will be given to Op's Center Flight Control and I'll adhere to it without deviation from it till the maneuvers are completed successfully or problems develop that require us to stop and return to base." Erica looked hopeful at Lieutenant Kelly with confidence and determination to comply with the flight plan. "I can have a chase ship follow us and sit outside maneuver area." Bringing up the flight route and the sector they'll be maneuvering, letting Lieutenant look it over. She needed his support as commanding officer for this flight maneuvers to get the rest of the senior officers to go along with her testing. They had remained quiet during the briefing, for now letting XO ask the questions.

The starboard egress door slid open and a flustered Ensign Price shuffled through them. She felt like she was not making a good showing on her first day as chief engineer, already being late for a meeting. "I'm sorry I'm late, Lieutenant. What have I missed?"

Ensign Erica De'Havean looked at the new crew person entering the briefing room and most of the visible viewing screens showing what information that had already been gone over. But needing the cooperation of the Chief Engineer, She carefully went over her brief that she had given Lieutenant Kelly and a few others that was present.

"What do you think, Ensign?" Morgan asked, turning to the Chief Engineer.

"It's an awfully risky procedure, Ensign. I'm worried that we would be putting a lot of unnecessary stress on the hull. The warp engines were never meant to work that way."

Erica looked thoughtful, "I figured to ease into them and the areas of the hull that show weakness could be strengthened with a more rigider frame." Moving to another screen and showing the areas that had been discovered in the holo-simulation. "These areas here have already been identified." Looking at both of them, "But the real test will show areas that a holo-sim can't."

"You reckon you can hold her together while we try it, Ensign?" Kelly asked, directing his attention to the Chief Engineer.

"I suppose we can give it a shot," the ensign answered, hoping that she could live up to her promise.
