Touring the New Office

Mission: Shadows and Whispers
Tovan took another deep breath as she ran over her checklist. The new chief of operations was due to arrive on the station today, although he didn't officially start for a few more days. Regardless, she didn't have long to make sure that everything was in working order before the new staff arrived.
"Alright, people. We don't have a lot of time left. McKinley, have you taken care of that misalignment of the communications array?"
Ensign McKinley nodded. "Yes, Lieutenant. It must have been hit by some debris during the battle, but we got it fixed. It should make that hum go away too."
"Good, good. Harrison, there was a complaint from the science department about a slow response time. Have you looked into that?"
"Yes Lieutenant, It was a faulty bank of isolinear chips which I am in the process of replacing." Harrison replied
"Good. Let's make sure have someone double check new chips when we get them in. I don't want us to have any problems in an emergency." Alana went back to her PADD, checking the next item on her list.
"...and so, understandably, need someplace to work that's closer to the action as it were," Petty Officer Karr was saying as he emerged from the turbolift. There were only a handful of officers and technicians on duty which meant the yeoman was easily able to step to one side so that he was standing in front of an empty workstation. This allowed the second occupant, a lieutenant commander in services gold, to enter the room from behind him.
"We had something similar on 117," the commander remarked, "Made it a whole lot easier to deal with things as they came up. Didn't have to worry about running all the way down from Ops or all the way up from the engineering core."
Alana noticed a new voice coming from the turbolift behind her. His back was to her, so she couldn't see his rank insignia. But she couldn't have imagined that it was anyone else. She excused herself from their impromptu meeting and approached the officer. "Pardon my interruption, sir. I'm Lieutenant Alana Tovan, acting assistant chief of operations."
"Lieutenant Commander Walter Prescott." There were a lot of different ways introductions could happen. Some were planned and happened under relatively controlled circumstances. Others were not. In nearly every case, however, Walter knew how important it was to make sure he navigate the transition carefully. Best to avoid any unnecessary friction for the time being. It was for that reason he chose his next words carefully. "Commander Le was able to give me a pretty good overview of everything via subspace," Walter continued, "but I'm afraid we weren't able to get into too many of the details. Sounds like you're the one who will be helping to fill those in with me...along with Mister Karr here."
Tovan nodded. "Aye, sir. At least I'm one of them. I've been trying to compile status reports from the section chiefs ahead of your arrival." Alana started to fidget with her long jet black hair, making sure that it was pulled in front of her ears. It was a nervous habit that she had developed, which presented itself far more often when meeting new people, or she had the thought that she might not live up to expectations. "I was hoping to finish that report before you had arrived, sir. Unfortunately, I'm still working on it."
There was a pause. Walter could tell the lieutenant was nervous, though whether that was due to his unannounced visit or something else, he couldn't be sure. "I'm sure you have," he told her.
"I'll have that report ready for you first thing tomorrow, sir. You can count on that," Alana replied. She was worried about disappointing her new supervising officer, and they had only just met.
"Commander Le spoke very highly of you when we talked," Walter explained, "He told me that if I had any questions, especially about the Carthage or any of our other support vessels, you would make sure to set me straight. I appreciate you going through the effort to get things ready."
Alana tried not to let out an audible sigh of relief. "Thank you, sir. I take a lot of pride in my work. Anything you need, just let me know."
