Mission: The Pak'Leth Problem
Location: Counselor's Office

Dr. Daniels walked toward the Counselor's office. Wondering how she was going to take the truth about her past. She was going to find out. In the more classified parts of her file. The question was, how would she handle it?" The Doctor pushed the doorchime.

"Come in," Mignon said, looking up from her PADD.

Melissa entered with her usual smile. "Hello Counselor."

"Hi," Mignon smiled. How are you?"

"I'm doing fine." She stated. "Anyway, I have come here because there is something you must know about me Counselor. And it will not be easy for you to hear."

"Part of my job is listening to things that aren't easy to hear.

Melissa moved towards a viewport. "Understand that this is classified information. It cannot leave this room."

"Of course not, doctor,' Mignon assured her.

She spoke, "There once was a Colony near the Cardassian DMZ that became dissatisfied with the Federation's stance toward the Cardassians before the war. But they were not willing to support the Maquis and their attacks on the Cardassians. They believed that, if they did not act, they would eventually become the 'victims of politics.'"

"That's a potentially dangerous position to take."

Melissa continued, "They were running out of options. So, in desperation, they made a terrible decision. Recruiting a retired Tal'shiar agent, they began to take teenagers from the colony, and train them as assassins." She noted. "I was one of them." Melissa noted.

"They took them?" Mignon didn't like the sound of that. Teenagers had far too much on their plates and were far too vulnerable and memotional to deal well with the sort of training necessary to create an assassin.

"Their training is horrible counselor. Not only was I honed into an instrument of death, but the training involves mental reprograming. We we're trained to become emotionless, remorseless killers. And for five years of my life, they used me to dispose of the enemies of the Epsilon Idris Colony." Melissa noted. "It took me five more years to shake off the programing I was given, but I'll never be completely free of it."

"Did you go through Federation counseling to help remove the programming?" Mignon asked quietly.

Melissa responded, "You could say I've found my redemption Counselor. Learning medicine has done more for me than any psychological therapy has. Now I preserve life rather than ending it, and it helps me order my life."

"Do you still have any side effects?"

"Yes, who I once was did not survive the war. She fragmented mentally." Melissa noted. "I spent five years trying to find out who I was if I was not Kris Valtan. So I became Melissa Daniels, a better person than Kris Valtan. I would've wandered endlessly until I meet a doctor that convinced me to go into medicine.

"But did you put Kris together enough for her to rest in peace?"

Melissa spoke, "I cannot say she rests in peace Counselor. But at least she rests. But there is one other thing you have to know about me Counselor; I cannot kill. You have to understand. Kris Valtan rests in a grave in my mind. But I am afraid that, if I kill again, some of the old programming would probably kick in, and I'd become a killer again."

"That's understandable. At least as a doctor you can generally avoid situations that could put you in a dangerous position."

"I am hesitant to receive any mindmelds or any other telepathic therapy for this, Counselor. What's left of the mental programing is dangerous, even for a Betazoid or a Vulcan." She noted. "Do I take that risk Counselor, just so I'd be free of the programming?"

"There is traditional therapy that can work, doctor. It takes more time, but it is generally effective," Mignon assured her.

"Perhaps, but disturbing an old grave is not always the wisest thing to do. But I'll consider Counselor." She noted.

"If you're fine with who you are and who you were, then don't bother. But if you still have demons, it can help," Mignon assured her. "Something to consider for a later date. I think we're good for now."
