Physicals, Stickers, and Lollypops

Posted on Sat Apr 17th, 2010 @ 3:41pm by Lieutenant Commander Melissa Daniels M.D. & Captain Alexander Gunning & Commander Dietrich Reinhart & Captain Liarra Von & Lieutenant Commander Nilani Prax

Mission: Commissioned
Location: Sickbay
Timeline: MD01 - 1400hrs

[ON]

Dr. Daniels has spent the greater part of the day preparing for the crew's physicals. All that remained was to bring the senior staff in and check them out. She read the initial records on the crew. There were even two Joined Trill aboard, and she would have to run additional examinations to make sure the symbionts did not have any degenerative disorders. She stepped out into the waiting room and spoke. "Alright, who wants to go first?" she said with her usual smile.

Lt. Allein was buried in a panel and didn't hear the doctor's query. If she had to waste her time in sickbay then she was going to make the best of her time there and get these emergency systems in order.

Reinhart sat silently in the chair and stared blankly at the wall opposite of them. He was not about to be the example and get a flight physical in front of everyone. He remained still, and quiet.

The commander stood and looked around at the rest of the crew. "I suppose that'll be me then, before you all rush at once."

Melissa spoke, "Alright Commander, You're up. Have a seat on the Biobed."

"All right, Doctor. I hope we can get this out of the way quickly. I have a lot of business I need to attend to." The Commanding Officer lied.

Melissa spoke with a smile, "Commander, you're not a very good liar." She flipped open her tricorder. "Lets see, Blood Pressure in acceptable range, Weight is acceptable, and lets see whats in your blood." She stated. "I say this all the time, but you could use an extra helping of veggies in your diet Commander."

"I'd agree with you, Doctor. To be honest I could do with a little more food in my diet this past week. I've barely eaten anything." He sighed. "Sometimes I really think we should jack this whole assignment in, turn back and train as chefs."

Melissa spoke, "Being a chef is terribly dull Commander." She remembered memories of a time she once was a chef, however she served puffer fish sushi to a Ferengi arms dealer. "Well now, you have a clean bill of health for the time being. Now then, since your XO and Chief Engineer are showing a general lack of enthusiasm. They're up next. Starting with the Bajoran." She grinned.

The engineer hadn't been paying any attention and let out a little noise of triumph as she ran her tricorder over the console that was now humming with full life. She flipped the tricorder closed and began re-packing her tool kit when she realised that the doctor was looking at her. She looked up. "Can I help you?"

Melissa looked right into her eyes, and it said it all. "Biobed. Now. Unless we want to be relieved of duty."

Mara raised both her eyebrows and she heard the Captain's slight intake of break -- anyone who knew her, knew that sort of tone wouldn't get far with the engineer. He was the only reason she didn't just walk out. "Relieve me from duty and do what? Fix these systems yourself? If you don't want the ship to drift home I suggest you treat your fellow officers with a bit of respect, Doctor." She moved over to the biobed and leaned against it.

She didn't take that behavior lightly. Emotions went completely out of the window now and all that was left was an intense stare. "Respect is earned Lieutenant, and given in return. But I will excuse your behavior and the outburst." She flipped open the tricorder and began to scan her. "You have an abnormally high stress level Lieutenant. Along with lack of sleep and nutrition. How many hours are you scheduled for duty? And how long have you been on duty?" She stated, her voice lacked any hints of emotion.

Mara's face didn't change either and she didn't break eye contact. "38 hours. Which is the only reason we're on track, I might add."

Melissa responded, "I am restricting your duty hours to two six hour shifts. That will allow you plenty of time to deal with your malnutrition and sleep deprivation issues. One more thing, you may be the senior officer in Engineering, but I am the senior officer when it comes to your health. You may leave." She noted.

The engineer retrieved her tool kit and in one movement was out the door. If this woman thought that she was going to be putting any sort of limits on her workload then she'd been using one too many of those hypos. Mara smirked; She'd better pray that nothing in sickbay broke down.

Melissa turned toward the rest, "Commander Reinhart, your next." She stated in her normal demeanor.

He grunted as he stood from the chair, looking at folks standing around to watch the next victim, err... patient. Dietrich walked to the biobed and sat down, propping his hands on the edge and leaning over. He sat, with no emotion on his face, and concentrated on being still.

She flipped open her tricorder and began to scan him. "Well now, lets see what ails you today. Weight Acceptable..." She checked some more readings. "Anything I should know about?"

"Last tour of duty, I suffered major injuries. Phaser burns, lacerations to my shoulder, two classified incidents. My shoulder hurts every day." He was brutally honest, hiding anything could be trouble for this troubling doctor. The way she treated the Engineer, whew! Definitely can't be rude to her. "Besides that, no major issues."

Melissa continued to examine the shoulder. "I'm picking up abnormal scar tissue along the Median Nerve Cluster. I'm going to have to schedule you for Localized Neural Regeneration Therapy. Otherwise the pain will get get worse. That means you'll have to spend a good two hours in here, and you'll have to take it easy on the arm when I'm done for a few days." She handed him a PADD. "Tomorrow, 0600." She wanted to do it early because he was honest with her, for that, she would be accommodating for his schedule.

"Yes, Ma'am," he replied, somewhat uneasy about the word "surgery". He was torn between the feeling of getting neural-repair surgery, as well as his shoulder not hurting. And he knew that "a couple of days" might as well be "a couple of weeks." He's known plenty of people to get shoulder surgery and what happens afterwords. He went ahead and finished his exam first, unsure of what was to come. "Anything else, doctor?"

She smiled and handed him a lollypop. "Nope, you took it like a man. Have a nice day sir."

Reinhart muttered something under his breath, hoping that there wasn't a Betazoid somewhere around, because he/she would certainly be picking up a negative attitude from the angry German. "Thanks," he said with a screw you grin, "see you tomorrow." And I won't brush my teeth after this lollypop, see how you like my breath in the morning at 0600. Dietrich left without saying another word.

"Well, then," he said, standing up and looking around. Dietrich straightened his jacket and took his leave, glad to get the hell out of sickbay, but only for some fifteen hours.

Melissa entered the waiting room. "Ms. Von, you're up." She said with a smile. It was odd, there was not a trace of the anger she had toward the Chief Engineer. Though she enjoyed being happy, the other emotions had their uses.

Liarra jumped to her feet. She didn't want to get yelled at like her roommate did. She strolled across the room, and hopped up on the biobed.

Melissa began to scan her. "Well now, the host seems to be in good health. Do you recall, over your last lifetimes, any signs of Symbiont Memory Fatigue Syndrome?"

Liarra pondered for a moment. "Not that I can recall, Doctor. But I suppose that doesn't really tell us anything if the symbiont is having memory issues. Von is still fairly young, at least as far as most symbionts go. I'm sure you can get Von's medical records from the Symbiosis Commission on Trill if you need them."

Melissa nodded, "I might schedule you a follow-up appointment just so we can see if Von is showing any forms of post-symbiotic stress disorder from the joining. It looks like you're free to go." She held up two lollypops. "Give the second one to the Commander please." She said with a grin.

"I'll be sure to pass this along. Thank you, Doctor." Liarra took the lollypops and hopped off the bed. For having over 500 years of memories, Liarra felt surprising more youthful since her joining. "Let me know when you want that follow-up." Nodding to Daniels, she took her lollypops and left sickbay.

Melissa left. "Ms. Prax, You're next."

"You got it, Doc," Nilani said, smiling as she strolled towards the biobed that had probably seen the most people sit on it today than it will ever see within one day again anytime soon, an propping herself up on it.

Melissa opened her Tricorder. "Well, you're in a good mood today. Much better than our XO and Chief Engineer."

"If there's one thing I've learnt, it's that there is no point in being in a bad mood without reason," Nilani responded. She hadn't met the engineer yet - at least not for any significant amount of time. But Reinhart - she had always pinned him at the type not to be too fond of doctors, for some reason.

"Well, another Joined Trll. Don't see too many of those on the same ship. I might schedule you for the same tests SMFS and other Symbiotic Stress Disorders I'm going to do for Ms. Von. Other than that, you're fit for duty." She held up a lollypop. "Here you go, for your health."

"I always figured it was a lie that sweets were unhealthy," Prax joked, as she hopped off the biobed and took the lollypop. "Something so nice surely couldn't be anything but good for me, right?"

Melissa spoke, "You know what they say, too much of a good thing can be a bad thing. The Engineer didn't get one because of her attitude, and the Commander got one because he needed to have his day brightened." She joked.

Nilani smiled. "I'll convince him to play a game of Carcassonne later if his day really needs brightening," she said, as she headed for the door. "See you later, Doc!"
