Admissions

Mission: Commissioned
Location: Starfleet Medical School Campus
Timeline: Eight Years Ago

Dr. Janson spoke. "She has to have cheated, no one dose this well on the admissions exam without cheating. She got every question correct, and even the trick question got noticed.

Dr. Forrester spoke, "I'm not sure. This woman has been studying chemistry and biology for the last seven years. I had her transcript pulled, and it would be a mistake not to admit her."

The older Betazoid sighed and rubber her eyes, this was the part of her job that Sydney hated the most. "If she was clever enough to cheat her way through the test, she'll be more than capable of completing the program, don't you think?" She offered a wry smile, knowing that it was exactly what the other doctors didn't want to hear, but she did think it was a valid point.

Dr. Janson spoke, "The Applicant goes by the name of Melissa Daniels. But thats the problem, we have no record of this woman existing on any Federation world or colony. Which raises serious doubts about her academic record. If she comes from outside the Federation, then she must have been exposed to the sub-standard and backwards scholastic systems of the frontier."

Forrester spoke, "Her transcripts prove otherwise Dr. Janson. Especially the dedication she's showed in her studies before she applied here. I vote in favor of her admittance."

Jaro dropped her PaDD and glared at Dr. Janson. "So someone needs the Federation's stamp of approval before they can practice medicine now?" She openly scoffed at him and then nodded to Dr. Forrester. "I agree with Anne, whatever her background she's proven she's capable, even if not in the most typical ways. I say we give her a shot."

Almost seven Doctors voted yes. One right after the other.

Melissa continued to play Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata in one of the Academy's Music Classrooms. Class was not in session, so she let herself in. She was so caught up in the music that she didn't hear Jaro's entry. Melissa had changed drastically. Her look was softer and more refined than the last time they had meet.

The Doctor remained in the doorway and watched the younger woman play. She crossed her arms. If she didn't know Melissa, she wouldn't have believed it were possible for someone to be this good at everything she tried. It was the one thing she had always found annoying about the woman, but she smiled and cleared her throat.

Melissa stopped playing and turned. "Doctor, Good to see you again."

"And you." She stood up and came fully into the room.

"I thought on a new purpose long and hard these last few years, and I've found a new purpose after these long years." Melissa noted. "It will be difficult, but I prefer it to killing."

"I'm glad to hear it." Jaro hesitated and crossed her arms again. "Daniels, I've recommended your entrance, but I need to make sure that . . . that you're not just doing this as some sort of penance for what you've done." Usually the Betazoid wouldn't have asked a question like this, but Melissa's mind was a bit . . . confused on this point, to say the very least.

Melissa spoke, "All that matters is that I move forward with my life."

The doctor nodded. "I can understand that. I think you'll make a good doctor, actually. Just make sure you're getting into it for the right reasons. You don't want to turn fifty and regret another decision."

Melissa understood that. "Doctor, I already have many regrets in my life. Too many to count."

Jaro smiled, realising that she hadn't understood. "That's the point."

Melissa nodded and began to play the piano again. She genuinely wished she could tell Sydney.
