Backpost - Stomach Athletics

Posted on Wed Oct 13th, 2010 @ 8:22am by Lieutenant Commander Nilani Prax & Lieutenant Commander Melissa Daniels M.D.

Mission: Welcome to Archa IV
Location: Starbase 332 - Chief Medical Officer's Office

Nilani had been struck by how much of the station had been dedicated to the medical facilities - so much so that the schematics actually listed the facilities as a full-on Federation Hospital. It had felt as such too, when she had entered; nurses and doctors walking around, a reception desk, and even an internal map showing the layout of the hospital without the paraphernalia of the rest of the station around it. Nilani had never particularly had a problem with hospitals, but a memory from Prax that she couldn't quite pinpoint gave her a sense of discomfort that she hadn't felt in the Jackal's sickbay. Deciding it might be something to do with so many strange faces, and the fact that whoever treated her today might never even see or hear of her next time she walked in, she had asked the receptionist to direct her to the CMO office, using her status as a senior officer on the station as a quick pass to get past the whole rigmarole of setting up an appointment. Clearly the majority of the staff were carry-ons from the last set of station administration, and had become efficient at the processes they had known from before.

The door to Melissa's office was open when Nilani arrived, and so holding onto the frame, she poked her head and upper body inside. "How's the new space, doc?" she asked merrily.

Melissa smiled, "Lieutenant Prax, come in." She gestured the Chief Science Officer inside. "Honestly, this is not how I envisioned my career in medicine. I've always seen myself running one sickbay. Now I go from a small clinic on the Jackal to this behemoth. I have an entire hospital board to deal with, with all the opinions, and little old me has to get them to play nice." She put her elbows on the table and rested her head in her arms. "Sometimes it feels like I am just banging my head against the wall."

"I'm glad I'm not the only one a little intimidated by this place," Nilani said, as she stepped fully into the office. "In all my lifetimes, I don't think I've ever felt so... small."

Melissa nodded, "I know exactly how you feel. But this place has its perks. It's been too long since I last had a massage from a professional masseur."

"Now that definitely sounds like its something I should try," Nilani responded, smiling. "Before I do though, could you give me a hand with something? I think I might have eaten something my digestive system didn't quite agree with. It feels like Prax is doing summersaults down there.

Melissa spoke, "Then why don't we go to one of the examination rooms, and we'll figure out what exactly is going on with Prax. But I get the impression Prax wants to participate in that triathlon thing that I've been bothered about just recently. This way." She said with a grin.

"Well I certainly don't," Nilani smiled. Though the joke didn't really match with Trill physiology - Nilani was Prax, and Prax was Nilani; mentally there was no distinguishing them - she wasn't really one to be arsy about specifics, especially when Melissa was only making a joke.

Melissa lead the way into her private examination room. The administrator of this facility got many Perks. "Alright, lets see whats going on." She scanned Prax with a tricorder. "Oh there it is. Looks like food poisoning, and Prax is the one that got it."

"That's odd," Nilani responded. "Trill physiology is usually more robust than that. I've never had any problem with my food before."

Melissa loaded a hypospay. "You eat for two Nilani. During the joining process, the symbiant draws nutrition from the host's stomach. Sometimes certain bacteria, that the host stomach can deal with, does not necessarily agree with the symbiont's digestive system. But this is the odd thing. The Replicators carry a biofilter, just like a transporter. Have you eaten at any of the restaurants on the promenade lately?" Melissa administered the hypospay into the area near the symbiont. "That should calm things down a little. I recommend light foods like chicken broth for the time being."

"I've eaten at a few of them, yeah. I've quite come to like the Klingon restaurant, though it can be quite grubby a lot of the time. The Arctan food's quite good too, but they're fairly clean."

Melissa spoke, "Actually, the Restaurants on the Promenade have good reviews for hygiene. But I'm beginning to wonder about their suppliers." Melissa stated. "I can pass this along to Base Security, but they have their hands full already."

"I've heard we've got a private eye aboard the station," Nilani said, as she jumped down off the biobed. "Maybe we could give him the chance to have a look into it?"

Melissa spoke, "Excellent idea, I'll call him into my office and explain the situation." She stated.

"Sounds good," Nilani answered. "I'll see you later then."
