Stalking the Prey

Mission: Sins of Lives Past
Location: Refugee Areas

The turbolift doors hushed open and the tall, imposing Starfleet lieutenant in gold strode out, followed by an almost mouse-like Saurian subordinate clutching a PADD close to his chest.

"I hate those uniforms," Zezz'a spat, regarding the tight black jackets with departmental piping which the two officers wore. He bit into a bitter apple and glared off after the Lieutenant. "Every morning it's the same damned thing. I'm sick of watching this guy."

"It won't be much longer, Zezz'a. Just relax," Valia replied. While he fixated on the apple, the Romulan toyed with a butterfly knife. "Those uniforms aren't that bad, anyway. Some of the older ones looked like pajamas. At least they're more colorful than Klingon uniforms." Unlike her impatient friend, Valia remained more stoic. But then, just about the only way for a Romulan to blend in was to act like a Vulcan, a thought that always made her shudder. Then again, traveling with a Reman pretty much threw that ruse out the nearest airlock. "We just need to find a place to make the grab. Then the fun can begin."

Deakin made his way through the cluttered, haphazard living space, pointing here and there, issuing instructions to his follower who dutifully tapped away at the PADD. He talked with security personnel and the odd refugee, but he moved along fairly quickly.

Luckily for Zezz'a and Valia they weren't challenged by any security personnel as they passed through the massive door to the cargo bay. "Why do we have to do this? Can't Telan get his lapdog to follow him around?"

"Do you really trust that runt to do anything right? Bothek couldn't track his own ears if they weren't attached to that massive head of his. And Darby wouldn't be able to keep her mouth shut. She'd be too busy trying to strike up a conversation with him instead of trying to trail him." Valia thought back to the docking bay when they arrived. It did seem rather odd that Darby wasn't with them, but she was quite sure why. The peace and quiet was a nice change of pace, but then again, the silence was almost unsettling.

"One thing's for sure," the Reman looked around the room at the security presence, "This isn't the place to do the grab. We'd be better getting him on his way to his office, provided we're able to get up to that deck without creating a scene."

"Agreed. We need to ditch the Saurian though. Killing him would just leave a mess, and would complicate matters. One missing Starfleet officer is less suspicious than two." Valia flipped her knife closed and returned it to her pocket, getting ready to move quickly if need be.

Deakin finished up in that section of accommodations and led his Saurian assistant away down one of the busy thoroughfare corridors leading toward the core of the starbase. He followed it for only about twenty metres before taking a right turn down a short corridor that was barely occupied and terminated at a door, which parted as Deakin approached allowing him access.

Zezz'a started toward the door leading to one of the waste recycling units, but Valia, put her hand on his chest to stop him. "Wait, Zezz'a. Let's hold up here."

He stopped in his tracks, glaring at the Romulan as he did so.

Valia shook her head. "Something feels odd. This doesn't seem like part of his routine. I think he knows were here. I don't know how, but I think he knows. Deakin may be setting us up for a trap."

"You're right." Zezz'a stated flatly, peering down the corridor after their target. "Regardless- it's the best place to grab him. Everywhere else is too crowded. Let's make sure we're here tomorrow morning with the rest of the team. If it is a trap, hopefully we'll be able to outgun them."

"I hope it doesn't come to that. Phaser fire would probably alert station security."

"That's the beauty of a station, my Romulan chum." Zezz'a replied with a degree of cheer in his voice. It wasn't often that he got to teach Valia something and he wasn't going to pass up the opportunity. "Federation stations don't have unauthorised fire alerts- that's why Telan was so delighted that the human was here."

Valia was a bit disappointed in herself for missing such an important detail. She'll have to correct the error in her sources, and make sure that it doesn't happen again. "That's good. That could buy us a bit more time. So far he's been coming to waste recycling every day, even if he doesn't spend much time here. Let's get back to Telan. We should set up our ambush tomorrow morning. It may still be a trap, but if we know it's a trap, we still have an advantage."
