Mission: Ill Tidings
Location: Maxwell Family Quarters

Ed was working in the kitchen of their quarters making dinner. Ryan was either working on homework or watching some holo vid or other. It was hard to tell with him. At least when he was doing homework thats exactly what he was doing, no matter what he had on in the background. He hadn't exactly decided what to cook, but he had a few options.

After her paperwork was finished, Blaze hurried back to her quarters to get ready for dinner. Unlike their very first date, she didn't find herself so worried about what she needed to wear. Life was a bit simpler that way. Even if he wouldn't have cared, showing up in her flightsuit probably wouldn't have been the best choice. She took a quick shower and threw on one of her few dresses, a knee length navy blue dress with wide straps at the shoulders. The skirt hung loose enough that it moved around when she walked, leaving her looking classy, but still able to move in an emergency. It was a curse of being a pilot facing threat of needing to scramble.

On the way to Ed's quarters, their conversation from earlier played back through her mind. She still wasn't sure what to think of his suggestion, and she wasn't sure how quickly she'd be able to come up with a real answer. But he was willing to respect her need for time to fully process and consider the possibility. There was no way that she would be able to decide simply before dinner. Finally reaching his quarters, she pressed the chime outside his door.

"Ry, can you get that?" Ed called over his shoulder as he sorted ingredients into different possible meals.

"Sure thing." Ryan said as he set his PADD aside and got up from the couch. He walked over to the door and pressed the button to open them. He smiled brightly when he saw who was on the other side of the door. "Hi Lynsi. Come on in, Pop's fumbling around in the kitchen."

"Hey Ryan," Lynsi replied, walking into their quarters. "How's school going?"

"Eh, it's school." He said noncommittally with a shrug. "Just finished my homework for the night. Waiting to see what topic I get for the history paper tomorrow."

"Ah, history. Not my best subject, but certainly not my worst. What era are you studying?"

"The World Wars on Earth." The boy shrugged. "Such old technologies compared to know. Hard to believe they were used for so long. All that fighting seems pointless when nothing really came from it all."

"I know I'm a soldier, so I'm not really the best one to talk, but even more recent wars seemed to be fought for pointless reasons. You're too young to remember the Dominion War, but no matter what ideals you want to quote, in the end it was a war fought because one side decided they wanted to conquer the other." Lynsi shook her head. "Still, that's an interesting era to study. Wait until you get to World War Three and the years leading up to First Contact. To paraphrase our Vulcan friends, it is fascinating."

"History isn't exactly his favorite subject. I think he's going science or medical on me." Ed said with a grin from the entrance to the kitchen. "I tried to raise him right, but you know how it is with kids these days."

Lynsi moved away from Ryan and started for the kitchen. "Nobody's perfect. I suppose Starfleet needs scientists and doctors too," she said smiling.

"I suppose." Ed said with a smile as he slid his arms around her waist. "It really is too bad I can't do this during the duty day." He said as he kissed her gently.

Lynsi returned the kiss, ignoring any looks that Ryan might have given the couple. "You know you can't. You'll make all the other pilots jealous of you," she added playfully.

"More than a few would be jealous of you too dear." He teased her with a smile. "Dinner in half an hour Ry." He called over to the living room.

"Then I have time to get ready for practice." The younger Maxwell said and made a beeline for his room.

"He's taken an avid interest in Parises Squares." Ed said with a grin.

"Now that's a subject I could get behind. I played quite a bit when I was his age too. I was never that great, certainly no star. But I did play," Lynsi added, returning the grin. "I think my mother would have preferred that I played a safer sport, but where's the fun in that?"

"You doing something safe and mild mannered?" Ed asked with a grin. "Now that is hard to picture."

"You and me both. If something's worth doing, it's worth overdoing, right?"

"Now there is a tempting idea for after dinner." Ed said with a wicked grin.

Lynsi returned the grin. "Let's just worry about dinner first there, cowboy."

Dinner went along quite well. The conversation was relaxed and easy, there were no forced smiles or false politeness. Ryan hadn't been exactly excited when Ed and Lynsi had started to see each other, after all he was here because of his mother's passing. It had taken some time for him to open up to the idea of another woman possibly stepping into that role. The enchilada's definitely had hit the spot, at least for Ed anyways. Ryan hadn't been home before Ed had changed from his uniform to his regular clothes, so he hadn't seen the new rank on his collar, if the youngster would have noticed it anyways.

"So should I fill junior in on what the Captain dumped on me today?" Ed asked with a wry smile.

Blaze shrugged as she leaned back in her chair, stuffed from the dinner. "It probably wouldn't be a bad idea. I'm sure he'll notice eventually."

"Well in addition to getting bumped up to Lieutenant Colonel this afternoon, the Captain decided to put me in charge of the Jackal. Which means I'm going to be spending some time away from the station. Could be a few days at a time, could be a couple of weeks."

"So... am I going with you then?" Ryan asked slowly. He didn't like the idea of being on the station by himself for up to a couple of weeks. Then there was the thought that these trips might be dangerous for his dad, not something he liked to think about since his dad was all he had left.

"Sorry pal, you don't get to come with." Ed shook his head. "Jackal's a defiant class, means she's damn small. I wouldn't have room for you and I'm not interrupting your school time and your activities. Lynsi and I talked about this today after it all happened. She's agreed to either check in on you or stay here with you while I'm gone."

"If it makes you feel any better, he's not letting me tag along either," Lynsi added. "But I'm sure it won't be all bad. We can have some fun while your dad is away, I'm sure."

"Someone has to mind the store while I'm away playing starship captain instead of being here doing my real job." Ed said with a smile to her. "Beside's I'm sure its going to be dreadfully boring. Overall this is a pretty quiet sector."

Well, except for all of the Sojourners running around, Lynsi thought to herself, but she managed to stop before saying it out loud. "True, the patrols probably won't be that exciting. And he'll be stuck on the Jackal with no holodeck."

"No holdeck, no son and no Lynsi." Ed agreed with a frown. "Putting it in that context, how the hell did I let her talk me into this deal?" He sighed and shook his head. "Hard to say no to something when you just got your silver oakleaf."

"It's surprising what you can be talked in when given a new rank insignia," Lynsi replied with a quick laugh. "Besides, a little fresh air would be good for you. It must be exhausting getting shown up by the pilots under your command all the time." She kept up the grin, just to let him know that she was teasing.

"Keep talking Lynsi. That trophy is going in my office, not yours." Ed laughed, referring to the Top Gun competition that was quickly coming to a close.

"Right, right. That one that will be my office while you're gone on the Jackal. Don't be sure that trophy's yours. I still have a few tricks left," Lynsi said with a laugh. She lifted her glass of wine. "Here's to your promotion, and for hoping that you don't forget how to fly."

Ed grinned and raised his glass in return. "Once a pilot, always a pilot."
