A Forensic Recruitment Policy

Posted on Fri Oct 23rd, 2015 @ 4:55am by Commander Jordan Gunning & Commander Titus Livius Drusus PhD

Mission: By Dawn's Early Light
Location: Chief Science Officer's Office [Deck 95, Starbase 332]
Timeline: After "The Best Candidates"

With most of the security staff selected from the pool - something which Jordan Gunning had found similar to a sports draft - there was one serious gap left in the department and he didn't have any leads on good candidates.

He absent-mindedly knocked on the door of the Chief Science Officer, forgetting about the chime which would have made his presence much more obvious.

Drusus was leaning back in his chair and held the PADD out at arms length almost directly above him as he read. He had been immersed in the latest data dump from Daystrom for almost six hours now and was busy reading a fascinating dissertation on the immune system of the Andorian Tundra Sloth.

When the silence of his office was shattered by tapping on the door, the child-like look of wonder on Drusus's face instantly distorted into an irritated scowl and he swung his legs down off the desk and straightened the chair. "What?" he called before peering through the glass to see Gunning, now in the gold of security. "Come in, Commander."

"Hi Titus." Gunning said, still trying in vain to get the Magna Roman to drop his formalities. "You got a minute?"

Squinting as his eyes adjusted to looking at something other than words on a screen, Drusus realised he wasn't even aware of the time. He furrowed his brow and looked down at a chronometer on the desk console. "Sure," he said, confident that he did, in fact, have time. He straightened up his chair and clasped his hands together on the desk. "What can I do for you?"

"Well, it's a bit of a weird one actually. I'm trying to find some new staff for my Crime Scene Unit and - rather than drag a load of kids in from off-station - I wondered if you knew of anyone who was qualified and might want to take on some additional duties."

The science officer considered that for a moment. A Crime Scene Unit? It certainly wasn't something you'd see on a starship, but on a space station the size of a medium city on the edge of Federation space it might just come in handy. He cast his mind to his staff and who might be suited for such a job. After a moment's thought he came up with literally dozens of names. "I'm sure I could get a few together," he said, rocking slightly on his chair as he steepled his fingers in front of his chin. "What kind of workload are you expecting for the unit?"

"Going by the reports there will be a significant amount of work for them." Gunning wasn't sure of the exact amount but having enough to cover the workload would be vital. "I think a staff of ten to sixteen should be able to cover it but I can't be absolutely sure."

Drusus leaned forward and pulled a PADD from the desk drawer. Moving swiftly he started tapping away, jotting down a list of names. As he tapped he said, "You'll need a range of skills. Anthropology, chemistry, biology, pathology -" he looked up at Gunning "- those are easy. But some other skills will be useful, too. Malouf has done some epidemiological studies on energy burns. Triggs has a background in psychology, in addition to her genetics training. Co'Vaylla might be useful, too; he has a ... checkered past and knows about ballistics." He stopped talking at that point and tapped at the desk console, apparently looking for something.

Gunning tried to catch his eye after a solid minute of the huge Commander sitting in silence. "And...?"

The Magna Roman slowly looked back to the security chief and smiled. The name hadn't occurred to him in his initial sweep, but he had a nagging thought in the back of his mind. Then finally it burst forward and seemed almost too perfect that he had to confirm it. "Gotte has a PhD in Forensic Science. From a civilian university, though; got it before she joined Starfleet. That doesn't matter though, she's your Lead."

"Okay, excellent." Gunning replied, making a mental note to look Gotte up. "You're sure she'll be willing to take on the extra responsbility?"

Drusus smirked, "Most of my staff would jump at the chance to escape my imperium for even a short time. I'll talk with her, but I'm sure it won't be a problem."

Gunning smiled, imagining what it would be like to work for the domineering officer.

"As for the others," Drusus continued. "I'll forward you their files and you can take a look. Let me know who you want and I'll assemble them tomorrow at seventeen hundred hours so you can meet them. How does that sound?"

"That, my friend, sounds fantastic. Crime Scene lab at seventeen hundred then?"

The Magna Roman nodded. "Done."
