The New Guy

Posted on Sun Feb 7th, 2016 @ 4:05pm by Lieutenant William O'Hara Jr & Lieutenant Commander Le Austin

Mission: By Dawn's Early Light
Location: Corridors

It struck Austin that his first meeting with the new Engineer, Lt. O'Hara, hadn't gone as well as he'd liked. That didn't work for Austin at all, so as soon as his own list of repairs and tweaks allowed it, he made his way out to the power grid that Bill had been assigned to re-calibrate.

"O'Hara, you got a sec?" the Lt. Commander asked as he approached.

Bill barely heard the Lt. Commanders arrival. "Of course sir! I will be right out!" Bill finished off the last change needed as he came out and closed the access door.

As he straightened his uniform and grabbed his spanner and placed it back into his kit then closed it. "Something wrong sir!?" Bill stood there as he placed the tool kit on the counter near him.

"Nah, I don't think so," Austin replied, smiling. "I just wanted to talk to you one on one. You seemed a little unsure of yourself in the meeting, and I wanted to make sure everything is good." He explained.

"Permission to speak freely sir?" Bill commented calmly trying to keep any odd feelings out of his future response. As he waited calmly to the Lt commanders response.

"Okay... so..." Austin chuckled a bit. "You don't know me, so let me explain something real fast," He said, smiling. "I grew up in the Bajoran resistance. We fight together like family, we served like family, and we treated each other like family. That means we always spoke freely, and we were always welcome to be free with one another. I'm the worst Starfleet officer ever when it comes to all the formality crap. When you've got something to say, you say it, okay?" He said, giving the man a pat on the shoulder. "What's on your mind, O'hara?"

Bill looked at him confused "I was trying to get a clear indication of where i was going or what I was going to do. Because I was not even mentioned for duty post. And I ask if i was just watching to see or get a better understanding of the starbase gig first before I play with the bases systems or help repair damaged systems or starships." Bill sighed a moment and got sarcasm and felt like I was a first year cadet again..... Bill tried to keep his mouth in check. "I did nor know a screw driver from a hyper spanner." Bill said with a bit of anger as it subsided to a eerie calm.

Austin chuckled, "I think you misread me on that one, bud. My point was, you're a trained Starfleet Engineer. You don't need any one to hold your hand or show you how to do basic repairs. And I'm sure you can find your way around the station. We need all hands on deck, I can't have anyone holding someone's hand who doesn't need it. Make sense?" He explained.

"I appreciate you spelling it out for me. Sir!" Bill commented calmly to the man. "I understand there has been a lot going on and i am not familiar with the station. And the new protocols due to the situation that's going on currently." Bill put his tools away. since he was done with the repairs in this section. "He pulled out a padd and checked off on the repair and was checking to see what was next. "All makes sense. Sir!"
