Mission:
The Art of Survival
Location: Crash site, Unknown M Class Planet
Timeline: Immediately following "A Sudden Stop"
With the craft finally still, Von slowly lifted her head to try to make sense of their surroundings. They were definitely on a mountain, though she had no idea where. She started to move, but the pain in leg soon put a stop to that. She carefully sat up straighter to check on S'er'in'e. "Are you alright?"
S'er'in'e's head throbbed from the impact, warmth covered his muzzle as blood trickled from his nose. On a Human a head wound bleeds alot, on a large Caitian it bled profusely but posed no more risk than a Human bleed. Blood covered the shorted out console his head came to rest upon. Conciousness came slowly at first but more rapidly when he heard the Captain's voice. Ear and whisker movements indicated he was still alive until his eyes opened but when they did he wished it was a dream. "I am....mostly." He replied slowly sitting up from his slumped position over the console. Blood had matted his fur giving his face an unusual shape from the rounded feline shape he was known for. "Are you injured?" He asked as he got his bearings.
"My right leg is pinned under the console, and I'm pretty sure it's broken." Von started to work herself loose, but she stopped after another shot of pain. "I should be able to put a splint on it, but I think I'll need your help getting loose from the console." Liarra took another look at her travelling companion. With his matted fur, it was easy to see that he was, or at least had been, bleeding. "We should have a med kit on the shuttle. I'm not sure it will do much for broken bones, but we can at least treat your head wound."
S'er'in'e could feel the matted fur pull on his skin as he spoke. "A muzzle bleed, I impacted the console when we crashed. It has slowed." He replied touching his now very sensitive nose. He went to the bulkhead to find the medkit, it was not in its holder. He found it on the floor but there was a problem, it was damaged. He opened it to find many of its contents damaged, a hypo spray with only one vial of liquid which indicated a pain killer. A medical scanner with many scratches and gouges on it's surface but still operational. There was some bandaging still available which would prove useful. He also found some standard issue outside gear but it too was damaged, only the jacket remained. His chest and shoulder hurt but his priority was the Captain. He returned to the what remained of the front of the cabin.
"The medkit was damaged." He laid what he'd collected on the console between them.
"Well, that's not much to work with, but we can make due," she replied, trying to hide the disappointment on her face. "Let's take assessment of our situation. Are we perched precariously over a cliff, or are we solid?"
"Solid ground." S'er'in'e replied as he looked through the front section windows already knowing the answer himself. "Parts of the rear and starboard sections are missing, it appears we are in a wooded mountain range, it will be cold outside, at least for you I am afraid." The advantages of a fur coat to protect from the elements. "I would suggest we not tally long here, if this was sabotage there would be no reason to doubt the presence of sensor transmitters to record the destruction or at the very least relay our location should we have survived."
"Agreed," Von replied. She struggled to move the console that had her leg pinned. "But I'm afraid I'm not going anywhere at the moment. Help me get my leg unstuck. Before we can leave, we need to set my leg and fashion a makeshift splint."
S'er'in'e found two pieces to straight bulkhead, thin pieces that appeared to be more decorative trimming that anything. Searching the craft he found his bag, it too was badly damaged and unfortunately the shirt his Mate had worm was also burnt which masked her scent. Hoping it would still be of use he cut the viable parts into strips and returned to the front. "This should work." He placed the parts next to her on the floor as he looked at her leg. A scan revealed Von had broken her tibia bone with hairline fractures of the fibula. First though, he needed to get her out of the chair to ease the pressure the console and floor were exerting on her leg. He'd need to forcefully pull the chair back on his slides before anything
"I know my ways are uncomfortable to you, I can not change what I am, but I need permission to touch you if I am to move the chair and apply this and it will be painful, would you like a pain suppressant?"
Von wasn't really in a position to argue. She couldn't get free on her own, and if she didn't give him permission to touch her, then she wouldn't be going anywhere. She also debated taking the pain suppressant, but their supplies were limited and would have to last until they could be rescued, however long that would be. Still, getting her free and setting the bone would probably be the most painful part of the ordeal. "You have my permission to touch me, Colonel. And I will take some pain suppressant, but set it to a light dosage. We need to make it last."
S'er'in'e set a light dose and administered it to the neck, Von would feel much and S'er'in'e knew it but there was little choice if rescue as both knew was sometime away given how far they had to travel. He first had to ease the pressure on the break, this could be done by pushing her foot forward, it would hurt and fiercely so but it would mean all that was left to do was pull on her chair. With her bone already broken the damage was done, it would give but a metal floor would not and time was not a luxury if they were indeed tracked. "Brace yourself." For him to be under the console was easier than most considering what he was, down on hands and feet like the feline he was he placed one hand behind her heel, a firm grip and them a sharp sudden push forward.
The hypo eased some of the pain she was feeling, but she knew it would do little to help what was coming. Von took three deep breaths, each followed by a long exhale. On the last, she shut her eyes and nodded to S'er'in'e. With his sharp sudden push, a sharp pain shot up Liarra's leg. She let out a loud yelp and winced, trying desperately to downplay the pain. She may have been free, but they still had to set it, something else that she was not looking forward to.
That done S'er'in'e slowly moved her chair back on its slides, the Captain was now free but next came the setting of the bone and the application of the splint, both of which would be equally painful to some degree. His chest throbbed as too did his shoulder, he'd done damage but the extent was unknown for now but his priority was the Captain. Using a claw he tore the Captains trousers from knee to ankle to clearly see the injury area. Already bruising had developed and swelling he had to set it and with the splint ready all that remained was the act. Some light feeling told him exactly where the break was and having moved the splint into place he said. "I should tell you, my Mate and I are planning for offspring." While the truth the statement was more to distract from the present, take her mind off what he was doing, forcing her to consider what he'd said. It was at that exact time he set the bone, he did not know if it worked but he made the effort to ease her suffering none the less.
Liarra had to admit, the sudden statement had caught her off guard. She had been so focused on her injury that any other thought seemed out of place. But it seemed to have done the trick because her mind wandered just enough for her to look up at S'er'in'e's face when he set the bone. The resulting yell was far louder than the last, but she had no doubt that the pain would have been worse had she been focusing on the set.
He applied the splint and secured it, it would be uncomfortable on top of the soreness of the break but it would hold the bone in place and together until rescued. "Rest a moment, I will pack what I can and return."
Liarra pulled herself along the floor of the cabin, keeping her leg elevated until her back was against the bulkhead. Her breaths were shallow, but she struggled to bring them under control while S'er'in'e packed. The worst part was done, but it wasn't going to get any better. It took a few moments for her to regain her composure.
S'er'in'e backed what he could, some clothing including some of what remained of the Captains, a book of hers, a spare tunic of his, the cold weather jacket was in the cabin which he knew Von would need. When he returned he carried a small satchel with him containing the articles he'd collected, to them he added the medical supplies and the last things added was emergency rations along with the sole remaining phaser. Having seen Von had moved he was not about to ask her if she was alright, feeling such a question was a silly one. "If this was indeed sabotage I would advise against bringing the emergency transmitter, it will be a few days before the stations knows we did not arrive at Cestus 3 and whom ever is responsible for this may come and check so we should make for the mountains and hide there until rescue."
"I agree. Someone wanted us dead, so it's safe to say that they're going to make sure the job was done." Liarra grabbed a piece of the shuttle structure, and with her good leg, tried to pull herself up to her feet.
Slinging the satchel on his back S'er'in'e prepared to move, he noticed Von doing the same but her injury was slowing her progress.
Von risked putting some weight on her broken leg, but her gamble was rewarded with more pain. She shifted her weight back to the other leg before putting on the thermal jacket. "We should get out of here and try to find some shelter. I'm afraid I'm not going to be much use, though."
"And slow with your injury." It was not meant to be harsh but if they were being chased, speed was important. "If I may?" Taking into consideration his injured left shoulder and chest he gently and slowly picked up Von placing most of her weight to his good right side. "It may be uncomfortable but we need to put much distance between us and the crash site as early as possible in case others do arrive." Lifting her hurt but they needed to move and quickly, her wound would slow them considerably if left to walk herself, at least being carried the weight was off the leg thus reducing her pain.
Liarra knew it was futile to argue; S'er'in'e was right. She took the phaser from S'er'in'e, quickly checking the setting and level of charge. Satisfied, she settled into her fate of being carried. "At least let me be the lookout. I may not be able to walk, but I can still shoot. Let's go."
