Undercover Work can be HARD

Posted on Wed Oct 12th, 2016 @ 8:51pm by Kestarah K'Mara

Mission: Shadows and Whispers
Location: The Shining Star

Kes was standing on the deck above the Shining Star. It was the place she was going to be working at for the next few days. What she really needed was a "job" which would be putting her there on a regular schedule. If it was raided, she could be treated like any of the other "residents" who were picked up there. It would be an opportunity to try and step into the underworld. No one ever wanted to talk about the "underworld" or the "Mafia" or any other name for a large gang of people who were outside trying to run this station instead of the commander assigned to the position.

Shift change would be starting in about an hour. She had to time this jjuusstt right so that she had a good reason to be sitting on that stool or in that booth for several hours straight. With the Klingon PADD in her hand, she definately wouldn't look like a member of the fulltime crew living on the starbase.

She put on her sad/pissed of/don't talk to me face. She wanted the bartender or the waitress to start talking to her. She was smart enough to know a lot of different ways to be getting the needed information. Once inside the bar, she tried to look like a Klingon woman who was not sure where she would be in two days. Just like a homeless person of the 21st century, but clean.

"Whadda want?" the bartender asked her as she parked her behind on a bar stool.

"What I want is bloodwine, not that synthohol garbage served to the fleeters. What I need is a job which pays money so that I can start to rebuild my life here," Kes responded A job would be one way of being here a lot. "Biggest problem about the bloodwine is that the good stuff is expensive and I'm almost flat broke." Yeah, she told herself, as flat broke as she could be

Flat broke, the bartender pondered. One of the waitresses had been murdered sometime after she left the bar and before she was discovered at 0700 that morning. She looked like she could handle the tough crowd without too much trouble if she was forced too. Klingons were fighters, even the halfbreeds like this girl. Her bet that she could be bribed to start a war from time to time with THEM. Emphasis on THEM and not US.

He moved closer to her. "We had something happen to one of the waitresses last night, and she won't be back at work ever. She will be leaving in a few days to go back to Terran. She couldn't handle life here. I'm running one girl short. It's not easy work but between the tips, the regular pay and the 'off the clock' stuff you can get, a girl as cute as you can make a lot of money. But don't cross anyone in the gang or this will be a very short term job. Don't put your hands in the till. Do your job and fleece as much money as you can get from the clientele. Of course, if you overhear someone discussing a raid by the idiots in security or that someone on the station has something big worth taking, your payday will be much bigger than I suspect it is currently. You interested?"

Just what the security chief ordered. Kes had to hide her smile. It was like taking credits from a baby. She had been the officer who had started the investigation of that murder this morning. Perfect for her, she thought as she nodded.

"I'm very interested. When can I start?"

"Honey, this very instant. Let's get down to brass knuckles and get your uniform. I hope this is the start of a beautiful friendship"
