The Captain stared blankly across the desk at his yeoman. The fifth one he'd had in the short time he'd been Commanding Officer of the station- these kids just seemed to float in and out without much fanfare. It was a bit of a shame really.
"So, let me get this straight," he said slowly and quietly, there had been enough to elevate his stress levels today, "Starfleet have sent us an ensign to head up the entire security department?"
"That's about the size of it, sir." The young woman replied without the hesitancy that he'd come to expect from his yeomen. "The Commodore assures us that the ensign is the best that Starfleet has to offer at this time."
"She's nineteen years old." Gunning stated bluntly. "How do they believe she has the ability to do this job? Oh, right, fine. There's nothing I'm going to be able to do about it now. I'll just have to wait and see how she does. When does she come aboard?"
"She should be arriving now, sir."
"Okay, tell the Quartermaster down there to send her up immediately." Gunning declared, returning to his PADD. "Dismissed, yeoman."
To say that the trill was happy would be a major exaggeration. She had literally been sent to the shuttle directly from graduation. She knew what the rest of the crew would think of her. Still, it had to be done, so she had already started on her way to the captain's office even without being told. The sooner she got this out of the way, the better.
As she stopped in front of the door, she paused for a moment to calm her emotions before reaching out to press a finger against the button that would announce her presence. She waited until she heard the invitation to enter and casually walked in the door. As soon as she had entered, she dropped her luggage to the floor, what little there was of it and stood at attention in front of the older officer. "Ensign Kili Dell reporting for duty, Sir," the trill said in her usual brisk manner as her eyes made contact with those of her commanding officer.
"Welcome aboard, Ensign." The Captain said, almost feeling the need to avert his eyes from the trill's. This was it. The last thing he needed. Another attractive Trill woman on his senior staff. Were Starfleet taking the piss out of him or something? "Starfleet assures me that I have one of the most promising young officers in the fleet standing before me. Are they correct?"
Kili gave a slight shrug of her shoulders before answering, "That is not for me to decide, Sir. Of course, I'd like to think I'm the best officer in the fleet, but thinking it doesn't make it true. I'll let you make your own decisions based on my performance." She was a bit surprised, she almost expected to be put down by the older man in front of her. After all, how much experience could she have considering her age?
"Your promise and your experience will come to be completely separate over the months to come, Ensign. I just want to be assured that you're capable of running your department." Alex said, leaning forward in his chair. "Have a seat, for christ's sake. You're making me jumpy."
"Yes, Sir," she answered curtly, moving forward to slide into the chair. Now it was her turn to appear jumpy as it seemed she was ready to get up and stand at attention at the slightest hint of disapproval. "I believe I am capable enough to run the department, Sir. Of course, I'll need someone to bring me up to speed on things, but I'm sure my second in command would be more than able to do so."
"Yes, have Ensign Virrak update you. He's been struggling since Lieutenant Tieran was convalesced so do go easy on him." Gunning leant forward further, almost beckoning the young woman closer, "If you want him transferred then let me know. It might well benefit him in all honesty."
"I doubt he'd be very happy to see me, considering the fact that he's... quite a bit older than I am and I assume he got passed over for me, so... we'll just have to see how things go with him, Sir." she answered. She leaned a bit closer herself, keeping eye contact with the superior officer even though she was probably giving him a bit of an eyeful despite the fact she was wearing her uniform.
The Captain felt compelled to sit back in his seat slightly. "Be careful of him ensign. You're quite right that he was passed over in favour of you. However, I applied to have a reassigned officer as I expressly believe that Virrak isn't up to the job. He'll make an able assistant but he can't run a department."
"Understood, Sir," the trill answered before straightening herself up once more. "I'll see about getting caught up on things, current cases and so on, and I'll make sure to evaluate his performance and make a recommendation as to what I believe would be best for him. Would there be anything else, Sir? I was kind of stuck in a shuttle pod for a decent while and would like to go take a shower and unpack before jumping into things."
"No, you're dismissed Ensign. I'll see you tomorrow morning for your first duty shift." Gunning replied, letting the woman stand before he looked up with a smile. "Welcome aboard."
The trill smiled as she stood up. "Thank you, Sir," she answered before turning around with military precision and heading toward the door. She paused for a moment there, leaning down to grab her luggage before exiting the room.
