Marine Staff Selection
Posted on Mon Apr 2nd, 2012 @ 5:48pm by Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Gifford
Mission:
The Mystery Men of Mira
Location: SB 332, Deck 121 Marine Breifing Room
::On::
Gifford leaned back in his desk chair. The room was quite as his assembled officers came in and parked at the large wood conference table. The seats were taken fast. Other grabbed sofas and chairs or stood at the back of the room. The Major waited till it seemed everyone was somewhat settled..
"Good morning. Today as you know I'll be selecting officers for staff slots. These shall be rotating assignments. You shall work under the direction of the Executive Officer of the Battalion. It's important to the organization of the Fourteenth that your capable of performing any position in it, including mine."
Most of the Officers present were Marine Captains, some just recently promoted. Gifford was yet uncertain which ones he would recommend for Major slots. The majority would be assigned as company commanders and the rest company XO's. But this process was like picking a prom queen and always became an issue between a few of them. Some lasting entire careers. Hence the rotational staff slots. Everybody took a turn. Most wouldn't be suited for it until later in their careers but it was the only way to find the superior offer units this size would need.
Gifford tapped a his padd. A large screen came to life on the wall behind him and the lights dimmed. "As you see, the staff shall Have a Battalion training officer, Intelligence officer, Logistics and supply officer and two adjutants. One of these adjutants will have the Fire control center and the other shall float to assist and support the staff in general."
"For those of you who have been assigned company Co position listen up, We have a very large Marine barracks here. Get your marines settled in and squared away. I have a suspicion some of you will be going to work soon. As the Battalion hasn't been here long I prefer to get out into the sector in force quickly to establish some control before any opposing forces realize we have arrived."
"Your marines are encouraged to rest up and enjoy the station. I will add that they need to be aware that any form of misconduct will have swift and harsh punishment. If you can see this board behind me you know where your supposed to be. The selected staff officers will remain here. The rest of you are dismissed."
It only took a few minutes for the room to clear, but Gifford didn't observe any immediate issues between them. That would come later he was sure. He stepped from the conference room into his office and snatched up a stack of padd's for his newly selected staff. He had ordered lunch to be served and several mess attendants were setting up as the staff moved to take their places. Placing the stack of padd's on the table Gifford waved them all to sit and eat. Getting them to relax and think straight next on his agenda.
"While we are working closely together we can cut all the yes sirs and no sirs. Lets keep it professional. As staff officers your basically me. Some details you shall need to complete will be uncomfortable to you and your peers. That's just the way it is. Your success here depends on one thing and only one thing. Communications"
The staff remained in session for several hours, a few short breaks were taken but it was flowing very smoothly, The staff was bonding and Gifford spent the time explaining each position and it's duties. Gifford had them working out of the meeting room which was more than large enough. In addition they were given the next two days off to find their way around the station. By that time their CO would have the area converted into a decent battle staff area with sector communications and holomap terminals. But that was all for today. He retreated to his office and some coffee to sooth his raw throat..
