Considered Resignations

Melissa approached the ready room with a PADD, one that contained a letter she never wanted to send. She then pushed the doorchime to the Captain's office.

"Come in," the Captain said, "ahh, Doctor. How goes the investigation?"

Melissa entered and presented the resignation to Captain Gunning.

"What's this?" He asked as he flicked down the information contained in the PADD. "I have to say, I'm surprised Melissa. What brings you to this?"

"This crew knows of my past Captain. They no longer trust me, and upon the resolution of this situation, I will resign." Melissa stated.

"I admit that there is an element of the crew who are responsible for looking into all possible avenues." He clasped his hands. "I won't lie to you, we are looking into everyone as a suspect at this point. Everyone right across the board is under scrutiny.

Melissa nodded.

He sighed. "Where will you go?"

"I don't know, I'll go to the frontier, maybe open a clinic out there. They can always use good doctors." She noted.

"Yes, yes they can but we can also use one here." He replied. "We need you here."

Melissa turned around, "And how can I still serve here? When Maddux informs his superiors that he found a Broken Spear, namely the one they used ten years ago, I will have to kill in order to live. And in this atmosphere of distrust, I cannot be a doctor. So I am leaving, and do not follow me." She turned toward the viewport.

"Starfleet have already been informed of your situation. I informed Starfleet Security personally. You'd be surprised to learn that they were surprisingly supportive of your situation. Naturally, their suspicions are raised but they see no reason why you shouldn't carry on in the long run."

Melissa spoke, "And how can I face this? I had expected this secret to die with Kris Valtan."

"You can face it with honesty and integrity like you do every day. The senior staff aboard this station are aware of your situation but they are all under orders not to reveal the information to anyone with less than a level seven clearance." He balanced the PADD in the palm of his hand. "You don't have to do this."

Melissa sighed, "I wish things have been different. I wish that these diplomats did not give away the worlds on the borderlands. I wish that a sixteen year old girl was not taken from her parents and broken into a killing machine." She noted. "I do not even know where my parents are, or if they're still alive. During the training, our parents are relocated, and told that we're dead. We are given no link to them, whatsoever."

"And you feel like you should try to find them?"

Melissa spoke, "Find them?!? I have no idea where they put them. I have no pictures of them, nothing to connect myself to them. Only a memory. Their names may not exist anymore in any Federation databanks. I miss them."

"That's no reason not to try, Melissa." He answered quietly.

"Alright Captain, I'll stay with you." She sighed, "But looking for them is too dangerous right now."

"I think you might be right, Melissa but I'm glad you're going to stick by us," the Captain said, "we need to find out all we can to stop this happening and I can't fathom doing that without you."
