Academy Life part 3

Posted on Tue Sep 26th, 2017 @ 11:27pm by 1st Lieutenant Jason Tanner Marine Instructor & Major Alexandria Somers & Ensign Jenna Steel & Samanthia Akiashiro & Rear Admiral Minka Stannes & Rear Admiral Allan Wells & Lieutenant Commander Hoyt Quintan

Mission: A Day in the Life
Location: Science Labs
Timeline: While Academy 2 takes place 3pm day before PT post

OOC Somers: IF this is happening at the same time as the Marine PT then Somers cannot take part and she is no scientist anyways, so does this take place before, during or after the PT session by Tanner? She's there to be advised of the situation and it's the night before the PT, sorry for not clarifying that. I thought it was only polite for all dept heads, unit commanders to be advised of the situation.

OOC: Ok, so when does this take place in comparison to the PT one? The day before PT post say around 3pm.

Academy Science Instructor Lt Caniabo Li looked at all of the people who were crowded into the Science Labs and decided there was simply only one way to get everyone's attention. Putting one hand on a shoulder she stepped up onto the edge of the person's chair and onto the table, they were all gathered around before sitting down.

“Schistosomiasis.” Dr Caniabo Li broke the chatter. “Also known as Bilharzia or Snail Fever. Schistosomes are parasitic worms of which there are five species that affect Humans. These worms carried in freshwater snails were discovered in 1851 by a pathologist called Theodor Bilharz, after whom the disease is named. Water becomes infected when infected people urinate or poo into it. The eggs hatch and make their way into freshwater snails, where they infect swimmers by penetrating the skin. They grow inside the blood of the hosts, produce eggs some are excreted by the host and can find their way into new hosts by penetrating their skin. The eggs that remain in the original host build up and cause damage to the tissues of the intestines, bladder and other organs. Because there haven't been many major outbreaks in areas outside tropical and subtropical regions such as South and Central America, Africa, Asia and Southeast Asia, it isn't something that general medical is looking for and expecting. As at 2016 there are an estimated 200 million people infected on Earth, and with space travel now an everyday experience that number has increased. That means snails don't have to be sliding along the walls for people to catch it. You're all here because there are eight crew members dying from the USS Bonnells Bay, and a further one hundred and seventy two other infected cases, all of whom are now on one of the newly created drugs.”

“Newly Created?”

“A rash will appear a few days after being infected, however the rash may not be picked up or even reported. The longer a person is infected the more unwell they will feel, and logic dictates they would report it, however it is difficult to estimate how many people die from it, because the complications that lead to death will often disguise a diagnosis of schistosomiasis. The answer to your question is will modern drugs replacing drugs such as Praziquantel, Oxamniquine and Metrifonate kill the worms and undo the damage the worms have done, so far no. So in most cases only those who don't come forward at the first rash stage die. However since we so far don't have drugs to do what the original ones did, we're looking at everyone who is infected dying.”

Caniabo stuck her fingers in her mouth and whistled, getting silence again. “Panic is going to get us nowhere, which is why the Science Lab Area is locked and you were all checked for I.D. The bottom of the pile is that we no longer produce those three drugs, we are missing components. Scientists are trying come up with alternatives, but so far nothing has matched. That means, that another one hundred seventy two crew on the USS Bonnells Bay will also die. Now, here's the kicker, tricorders will not pick up Schistosomiasis. Those who are in the first lecture are having their blood taken now, you're going to have to use ancient methods to look for the worms. And everyone on this Starbase, whether they are permanent or casual are going to have to be tested, no matter how young. Which is why, we not only have science, but medical, security, marines, department heads, and command here. Basically there is too many inhabitants on this Starbase for the pathologists to check each sample under a microscope. So anyone with the ability to identify the worms needs to be drafted, but that's up to medical and command. Engineering have replicated the microscopes.”

“ As at 2016 there are an estimated 200 million people infected on Earth, Bonnells Bay has one hundred and eighty. The number of people on 332 that are infected could be anywhere from none to thousands. I hope your all of your medical staff are palliative care trained, or you're prepared to euthanise cases once they hit the point of no return, if it makes you feel better, these tests are happening on every Starfleet base, ship and colony, the UFOP have decided not to share this information outside Starfleet's boundaries for fear other species will blame Humans and Earth for infecting them. If it helps, no non Human onboard the Bonnells Bay tested positive. However we are recommending that everyone gets tested. Anyone leaving the base needs to take a sealed bottle or collection container, and they're going to have to empty their bladder and bowels into those containers, so they don't infect non infected territory. We've asked DCE and Station Maintenance to check Waste Management for contaminated faecal matter, so it can have it's DNA identified, the worms will carry the hosts DNA and that can be scanned by tricorders, if anyone wants to volunteer their services in the collection, we'll happily supply more qualified suits then Starfleet is supplying. For those checking blood samples, you simply pick up a covered slide stick it under the microscope and look a the sample through the eye viewers, if you have wigglers, you have a positive sample. Stick your hand in the air, someone in a protective suit will take the sample for a secondary check, involving a stain being put directly onto the blood, if it turns blue and the wigglers are still present, their identification details will be handed over to medical. Medical, Command, Security and the Marines are going to have to work out what they're doing from there.”

Sitting there listening to the lecture, which was mildly interesting, but it was something that she did not want a part of, so Alex politely sat out the whole event but would not volunteer, most of the time when there were subjects that went over her head, she retreated into her mind and began to plan a new holodeck simulation, she would pass all this information onto her Company Medics so that they will be aware of what is expected should it be encountered, but Somers remained silent and did not ask any questions.

:: Deck 26, Section D, Apartment 145 ::

The lighting was low and a taped sports event blared in the background. Conversation was loud to be heard over those watching and cheering or booing the sports event taking place on the big screen. Food aromas permeated the air along with various aromas from smoke from pipes and cigars befitting the mixed sentient lifeform in the room that gathered for the event. Even couples had broken off to find privacy for a quick liaison and or awaiting their turn for the only bedroom to complete their affairs.

"Joey! Quit scratching that rash. You'll only make it worse." A brunette in partial Security Gold Uniform as she batted her partners hand away from a rash on his muscular abdomen.

"Barbie! You're worsen than my Mother! I get these rashes all the time when there is Andorian Ice Weed Smoke in the air." The tall Marine growled at his date for the gathering amongst friends. "I'll have it checked out by Sally." He opened the door and yelled for Sally.

A petite blonde came scampering up and slipped into the room, ready to ply her trade of being a medical doctor. "Yeah Joey?" Spotting the rash, she snickered. "Andorian Ice Weed?" Getting a nod from Joey and a sigh as she shot over her shoulder at him. "I told you to take your allergy pills. Now I have to give you a shot." Giving him an evil grin as she disappeared out of the room.

"See Barbie... Even Sally knows of my affliction." Joey smirked giving the rash one more scratch, leaving bloody smears on his six-pack abdomen.

"Well.... That is soo sexy!" Spoken with sarcasms dripping from her tone. Totally disgusted with Joey, Barbie threw on her shirt, which ended up being worn inside out as she stormed from the room with Joey following behind her, pleading for her to return.

"For those without any medical or science knowledge, you're here to be advised of the situation. We thought it was only polite to bring you up to speed, we'll be asking for your co-operation in acquiring blood samples, for those in the 14th Battalion and the Starbase Air Wing Seventeen, you can have your blood taken under Marine Instructor Tanner, and she can do the testing, we'd like to get your co-operation so we can arrange sampling to be done in your own area, however anyone who tests positive will be transferred to quarantine." Canioba continued. "Sorry for the confusion, I wasn't expecting to be part of something like this, we are continuing with normal activities while the testing is done. You can either elect to tell your own people or have one of us do it. Medical will have to decide what and where they are putting those infected, which I guess will come down to how many positives we have. On another note, everyone is invited to attend any of the lectures that are classified as open. Before we unlock and let the non medical people out, is there any questions?"

"Having been here a week and not having left the Starbase or ventured into much of 332 I would be unaffected and besidesI had my full annual checkup before being assigned to 332 and I was cleared of such ailments, so I will not be giving a blood sample as I have not been in the area long enough to acquire any illness, but good luck to the rest of you and interesting lecture, farewell" Somers said with a smile and left the Science lab and returned to her office to do some administration tasks.

:: Starbase Hospital / Quarantine Area ::

Joey groused as he sat bare chested upon the examining room table. "Whadda ya mean I've gotten parasites?!" He barked at the Doctor in disbelief. "I've told ya that I haven't left the station. I'm in Supply here on the base!"

Doctor just turned the medical tricorder screen to show Joey to let him see the results himself after the second scan with a fresh tricorder with another Doctor to back him up.

The Second Doctor spoke softly, "We got the Medical Alert a few minutes ago. We're going have to place you in quarantine, Private Asgard." Speaking the first part to the first Doctor and last to Joey. "Medical Transport to Quarantine." Second doctor spoke into his hidden combadge, giving the exact location of Joey.

"He--" Joey was engulfed in a blue twinkly fog and disappeared along with the twinkly blue fog of the transporter beam. He soon appeared on another examination table. "... ey! Dammit!" Followed by some really crude words as he hopped off the table into the arms of awaiting Medical Personnel already in bio-hazard suits.

"This way," Came the muffled voice from one of bio-hazard suits.

Meanwhile the doctor filed the report on Private Joey Asgard being quarantined in having the parasite to Marine Command HQ

"If that's it, then we'll unlock the labs and leave these people to do their work.
