Alex was in her quarters pacing like a caged animal, it had been but a few scant hours since she got a classified called from Starfleet Marine High Command, she was being posted to a Top Secret assignment and it would be soon, she had not been in command of Omega long, but long enough to have earned the respect of her unit, but she had called Paul and he was on his way.
Paul was working on some files in his quarters when an urgent call came in from his Fiancee, it sounded urgent he was worried not much could make Alex uneasy, but somehow she was, so with concern etched on his features he rushed over to her quarters, he was running all the worst-case Scenarios in his head. It did not take him long to get to her quarters, he pressed the Buzzer.
In her quarters Alex paused and went automatically into a combat stance as the rooms buzzer sounded, forcing herself to relax "Enter!" she said and in walked Paul, she flung herself into his arms, it took him a split-second due to the surprise, but she felt his comforting arms go around her.
"Shh, what is wrong lass?" he asked as they broke apart.
She looked at him "I have been offered a new posting, it seems the USS Powell was not really lost, but its new mandate is secret, I do not know more than that" she said.
Holding her at arm's length "why so worried you have done Spec Ops missions before, what makes this one so different?" he asked puzzled.
Looking up at him "Last time I was in a team and I lost someone close to me, I have held ground command positions, even been an MCO, but this time I have been given the offer as the first Officer on the Powell under Lt Colonel Markov, he was First Officer on the Tomcat, but my fear is I will fail in this task as I have never been second in command of a ship before" Alex said.
Smiling at his betrothed "I am certain that you will do fine, you need to support the Captain of the ship, agree with him when it is required and if you think he has done something rash or wrong do so in private, you will be the first contact between the crew and the Captain, well this is what I have been told by your cousin in the past" Sharpe said with a smile.
Looking at him "so basically it is a learning curve then! instead of leading ground troops 99% of the time I will also be leading fleet officers etc, hmm a challenge, but I like a challenge" Somers responded then thought about something and looked at Paul alarmed. "One thing I want you to do is to watch out for Allen, she is a flirt a tease and she is a free spirit if you know what I mean?" Alex said with a knowing in her eyes that Paul seemed to catch on to her meaning.
"I can handle her, if I can chuck you into an ice cold container to sober you up, I can handle Jasmin Allen and she does not have your extensive skills" Paul said and saw Alex relax a little, will you help me pack my stuff?" she asked, Paul simply nodded and started with her belongings in the living area while she concentrated on her more personal items.
Down in the Marine area of the station word filtered down to Somer's Unit, knowing that there was always the rotation of new crew, it was not unheard of, but they decided to get Alex a going Away gift and a little leaving bash little did they know their boss was much more sneaky then them, she had no idea what their plans were, but she knew when word reached her people they would plan something.
Departure Day...
The day had finally come and all her stuff was packed and on the transport, she would go to earth first before her new assignment, as she arrived at the Arrival and Departures lounge and suddenly she jumps as all her unit jumps out and surprised her, at the head of the bunch is her fiancée Paul Sharpe she looked at him with mock anger.
"So help me, Paul, I am going to crucify you for this!" she said.
Looking sheepishly "hey you think we were going to let you go quietly" as he said this some let off party poppers.
Marine Captain Jeff Smith came forward and offered her a sombre farewell, he was usually reserved, she dropped her bags and gave him a hug, the surprised look on his face was one for the books, his reaction caused the group to giggle. Next came Jasmine Allen, she was the units flirt and the overly emotional one outside of combat, she could not say anything, she gave her former Commander a tearful hug, that lasted longer than was proper, but eventually, after some sobbing, she released Alex.
"It will be okay Jas, Jeff will be taking over from me and you will be okay" Alex comforted her while trying to hold back her own tears of sadness. Next came the Bajoran Torvan Sorel he was of the religious mindset and had his heart set upon becoming a Ranjin one of the Bajoran religious caste. His greeting was wishing her well and that the Prophets go with her, she returned the wishes in kind and went down the line the Klingon Sergeant Klagg was is usually brusque self.
"Major Somers, it has been my singular honour to have known you, your family name is a respected one in the Empire, your presence will be missed, I would have liked to have fought by your side in combat, but still it has been an honour Qua'pla in your next assignment" Klagg said giving her the Klingon salute.
She playfully said "Oh that is so sweet of you, that was really nice, you have a soft side I see, this is good" she said and saw Klagg puff up in indignation "relax Klagg I am only teasing, it too has been an honour to have served at your side 8does the Klingon Salute* Qua'Pla" Alex returned, showing him equal respect.
Everything after that was normal farewells, Alex had hoped to have a quiet wait in the arrival/departure area, but this was not the case, after some more farewells the marines left, leaving the love-birds alone, they embraced and shared a passionate kiss which lasted awhile. When they broke away Alex was breathing heavier.
"Dammit Paul that was some goodbye kiss, you are going to miss me!" Alex said.
"Is it that obvious, I do not know what this new command entails, but I know that when the time is correct you will rise to the occasion, you are nothing if not adaptable, commanding bridge crew is no different to ground pounders, the rules are more strict and there are more protocols to obey, but apart from that nothing will be different" Sharpe said.
"From your mouth to the maker's ears!" she quipped.
The Comms sounded signalling that her transport was arriving looking back to look "well it is that time I suppose" Alex said.
"Say hi to your parents for me will you?" Paul asked and Alex nodded.
Both shared another hug and a kiss that was a long one, another alert sounded signifying that the transports had docked and that passengers were disembarking, the pair broke away and Alex picked up her bags as he Padd bleeped signalling that her larger items had been placed aboard the transport. The pair walked to the embarkation gate and Alex showed her boarding pass and as the gate opened she turned to Paul.
"See you on the flip-side Lieutenant Sharpe," she said with a smile and entered the gantry that was linked to the entry hatch on the transport. The moment she had left his eye line he returned to his duties lamenting on her departure, but regardless she had now gone, he knew he would see her again, but when was a very good question.
