John passed through the portal to the Marine Communications center. Things had been going very well there since it had been fully staffed and running. Security was tight as it should be and Captain Griffiths work in getting that done had bee noted. Sully was there at the main briefing table with the maps and overlays of the Planet.

"Morning Sir."

"Greetings sergeant Major, is everything prepared?"

"You bet. I've been looking over these charts for a few hours and seen a few good locations for us to work with."

The Colonel sat at the table. "What have you got?"

"Sully handed Gifford a padd and punched up a holographic display of the first area. "This is a broad plain here. The wind is minimal for landing and the surface sturdy for the building of sheds and barracks. No mining resources even close to this site and no roads in the area."

He tapped the map and a second display appeared. "Not sure about this one. Pretty rugged area the Mountains offer great protection but open space is rare, However the Mountains offer some good cover and the opportunity to tunnel areas for security and storage. We could definitely conceal our existence here."

"The Third one is a long shot. Coastal area, beaches and palm trees. I would be concerned it would turn into a damn resort. Quite windy and subject to high level tides that could flood us out."

Gifford didn't like the Third option at all but he would let the staff check it out anyway. "Very good. I'm going to check the messages. Let me know when the staff arrives and we can get to work." Sully nodded in agreement and continued getting materials ready for the staff."

Naomi had finally arrived back on the planet and went into the command post and saw Sully.

"Hey Sully where is the Colonel?"

"He's off to the Head ma'am. I'm sure he'll be back in a few moments.

"Okay now I notice this terrain you have here, may I make a few suggestions, before I go see the Colonel?" She asked.

"Absolutely Ma'am. We have several locations on the grid." He popped up the map hologram for her to check."

Looking at the map "hmm... I am a little rusty on such maps gotten used to the vintage style maps, please brief me on the current defenses and such, I want to be well informed before I suggest anything" Naomi said.

"OH, let me switch the view then for ya." He made a few adjustments on the console and rendered a color overlay 2dimentional map crossed the table. "I like these a lot really. The water even flows to the currents. Very neat."

Laughing lightly "yes, yes it does, now brief please" She responded.

"This area here Ma'am is interesting. Elevated flood plane with access to the side of this Mountain. I good spot as any attack to the Base could only come crossed the open plane. Very easy to defend. The Mountain is Granite and excellent for constructing some hardened over watch bunkers."

"Indeed, have a pair of engineers each accompany a sniper/Recon up to those ridges and build those watch bunkers, no need to be hardened, just well concealed."

"The area that would approach the front of the base here on the plain is actually a march and would severely slow any land based attacks. An excellent kill zone really that would be very hard to detect until you got into it."

"Now we need to send recons out along these other fronts using all the cover that they can. Now what else have you to tell me about this terrain?" She asked.

"The main base area would be more than big enough to house a Battalion or two without bunching the structures up. It's solid ground and at the base of this Mountain we have excellent water resources several hundred meters down to cap a good well pump station in." Air units may be effected by the wind coming off the Mountain at certain times of the year. Something we will have to monitor down the road."

"True, lets get it done then Sully, lets get a solid foothold on this planet" Naomi said.

Gifford returned to the table. "Well all we need now is final approval from our hosts and our Fleet. This shall be a long process and I hope your all up for it."
