Melissa sighed as she placed a sheet over Ambassador Meyer's remains. "Computer, record time of death. 0233 Hours this morning. Patient died from cardiac arrest due to an overdose of sleeping medication. Signed, Doctor Melissa Daniels."

Gunning stormed through the doors to the mortuary, closely followed by his now ever-present entourage including a flustered (for a Vulcan) Ambassador T'Laarin. "Report, Doctor."

Melissa spoke, "She died from an overdose of a common anesthetic; Virazone. If used as directed, this medication dose not cause any problems. But when you get up to 50 ccs of it, it can stop the heart. That is why we have the replicators programmed to dispense no more than 10 ccs of Virazone as a sleep aid. But here's the problem Captain. I checked for a pill in her stomach contents, and I cannot find one. Someone used a hypospay on her in her sleep," she noted.

Davik walked around the metallic table, frowning slightly as he fingered the cold edges of the steel. "Someone is killing each of these ambassadors off one by one," he noted pensively. "Gul Kenta, Ambassador Meyer," he listed off.

Melissa spoke, "I need to see each of you in my office." She noted.

Gunning followed the doctor into her office, noting that the Ambassador was unwilling to join them in the room. She stood outside, eyes transfixed on the corpse before her.

The Trill followed after Gunning and Melissa, taking a spot near the wall to observe as they spoke.

Melissa entered the office and then spoke, "I don't know if I can stop this assassin. Broken Spear trained its agents well... too well."

How convenient, thought Maddux as his suspicions of Daniels rose; he made sure, however, to keep his face and body language neutral, with a dash of concern for the dead ambassadors thrown onto his face for good measure.

Davik was calm and even-centered, his blinks slow and his body language relaxed. Whatever his contemplations about what he was observing, he kept to himself as Melissa began speaking. "The Broken Spear, as you call them, is like an entity. Large and looming and gigantic, bigger than life. It seems impenetrable." he looked in her face and knew the confirmation even if she didn't speak it. "It is a ruse. Mortals are employed by other mortals. The system is set up to be perfection, but that does not make it perfect. It is always subject to the mistakes of mortals. This is one person out of the machine." He spread his hands apart slightly as he spoke. "Part of that ruse is to make it seem daunting and impossible to capture one of them. Repeated failures enforce the pattern and the ruse becomes stronger. The only thing that we can do is our best. Focusing on how we cannot do it is skeptical and cynical, realistic, pragmatic, but it also does not help us. Do you have any form of a plan to do so?" he asked, no suspicion whatsoever in his face, but it was often difficult to tell what he was thinking.

Melissa thought a moment. "Broken Spears do not have random targets, every target is prescribed by the Epsilon Idris Colonial Assembly. Targets considered for termination were voted upon." Melissa spoke, "That means, there is a member of the Assembly who survived, and has given this assassin a mission. I can send out a signal, on my old frequencies, requesting orders." She noted, "This may cause the Councilor to send meeting coordinates, or it may also cause him or her to go further into hiding. Regardless of the risk, I may get you a target list Lieutenant."

"Too dangerous," chimed in the Intel Chief. "You and I both know that their mission is too well-planned. They have all the personnel in the positions they want them in. Someone suddenly appearing out of the blue, who hasn't reported in in a long, long time and magically happens to be in the time and area of their current assassination mission is going to raise serious suspicion and likely drive them underground.

"Besides," he continued, "We already have a target list. I'm counting two visiting ambassadors dead. I'm willing to bet this isn't coincidence. Plenty of ambassadors left to kill."

Davik watched and listened mildly. "An organization that is so bent on destroying the individuality of its members into a greater consciousness, the objective for the greater good, will not easily give up one of its members. Did you have a mentor, someone who taught you your skills in the Broken Spear? Someone you had an emotional connection with in some way? A direct superior," he suggested. "If you can find someone who fits that criteria, it will be more cause for them to want to speak to you. Attempt to get the target list," Davik stated, ignoring Maddux's comment and looking at Melissa with a nod. "Would your old frequencies be effective?" he asked, tilting his head at her. "It is likely they are aware you have defected."

Melissa spoke, "He was a former member of the Romulan Tal'shiar. Commander Tal'ven. He wanted a place to disappear, Epsilon Idris wanted the Cardassians pacified. So a deal was made. However he did develop somewhat of an admiration for my skills in the latter days of my training. By Admiration I do not mean any form of romantic relationship. Tal'ven was a monster, but a monster we needed."

"He may be the person to start with," Davik replied mildly.

"I agree. Where the hell do we start looking though?" The Captain added.
